Great food, can’t be beaten for Indian food in Belfast. A little more expensive than a normal curry house, but it’s worth it.

My friends and family used to call me a «Ginger Root» so when I saw this place I thought it was a chance for me to be finally accepted. But on entry it became clear that this was not a haven for those with no souls but a rather popular Indian restaurant. The place was heaving but it was a Friday night and if they had of said there were no tables free I would not have been surprised. I tend to get knocked back a lot for my pale complexion and luminous hair but on this occasion I was lucky. The menu was large and expansive offering the best in Indian Cuisine, the smell of herbs and spices drifted from the kitchen stung the nostrils, in a good way. After we ordered every plate that passed left its scent in the air and only wetted our appetite further for the meal ahead. When the meal came it was everything we anticipated laden with flavour and care from the skilled chefs. The prices were decent too with the bill coming to under £50 for four diners. Excellent value and great service, even if the name is a bit misleading.

One of the important things about eating out for me is that the experience should transport you to a completely different place within a place. To me, Ginger Root with its well finished and sleek interior is very un-Belfast and authentic, though brassy, Indian style that I wouldn’t want to live with every day is great once in a while. The food we tried — lamb biyriani and chicken korma — tasted good though maybe the lamb was a little tough, however the korma was mild and delicate. You can choose between mild, medium and hot curry which is good for those who want spiciness without the streaming eyes. Apparently they genuinely care that the customers should like their food. The heat grading makes it good Indian restaurant choice for those less fond of spicy things. At the end, while one of us fumbled with cards and forgotten pin numbers the friendly staff waited with patience I can’t say I was bowled over by the food, so give it an average rating, but I’d like to try the Ginger Root again at a busier time, preferably taking advantage of their cheaper offers which we missed at that time.

Should any of you fine people have read any of my previous reviews(and I realise that this is a big if), you may have formed the opinion that I am completely and utterly obsessed with food. Gone. Out of it. Get me started on food, particularly Indian, and I will bore you to death. There are few things in this world that make me as happy as good curry and a beer. So, Gingeroot is naturally one of my favourite places to be, never mind eat in. I cannot really fault anything. Curryhouse staples such as madras and bhuna taste as great as your own favourite Indian, only more so. The restaurant interior is very clean, well-designed and bright. You’ll be served by someone who you’d definitely consider being close friends with. And with this restaurant being just up the road from the Grand Opera House, there are stupidly cheap pre-theatre offers on, all the time. And they have Cobra beer on tap. On tap, people! I’m away to sit in a dark room to contemplate what it is about lamb madras and Cobra that sends me over the edge, before I end up weighing 20 stone.

I don’t know if I just had a bad experience when I was here or perhaps they’ve changed the setup but I really wasn’t impressed with this city centre eatery when I went about a year back. It was one of the idle days where you really are at a loss as what to do, in the end myself and friend decided we’d sod going for a pint and instead enjoy something to eat.(pints soon followed however) The menu is a mixture of north and south Indian cuisine, many of the favourites you’re used to seeing along with a handful of others not quite as prevalent. The service was a little slow and the curry I had was a little bit thin, watery and a under seasoned. The lamb was fatty and hadn’t been well trimmed, it was however very soft and well braised. I must give it a bash again, it was cheap and I may have just caught them on a bit of a bad day.

I do like Indian food normally. However, when it comes to a takeaway, I never seem to choose Indian food. I don’t think it’s quite as ‘mainstream’ as say Chinese or European food. Nevertheless, I got a craving for something spicy, and after walking past any number of Chinese restaurants, I became inspired to go for an Indian and as I had wanted to try this place for such a long time, I figured what could possibly go wrong… Turned out nothing! The lunch menu was £6.50 for a starter, main and rice which was plentiful and very tasty. Upon taking a picture, I noticed they had an offer of three courses and wine for £10.95 so I ended up back there that night and it was just as good. I’m not an expert on Indian cuisine but to me, this place tasted very very nice.

One of my favourite restaurants in Belfast. Whilst I find the décor slightly generic and bland, I’m so enchanted with the staff that I cannot find any real fault with the place. First up — food. Wellin my view, this is not the very best Indian food you can get in Belfast; try the Jharna or Rajput on the Lisburn Road for that. Having said that, the food is still excellent, and the staff are more than happy to sex up or tone down the heat on any dish to suit your tastes. I have been in Indians where this is refused because it’s not how it’s meant to be cooked or something, so this is welcome. I love simple stuff like Tikka Masala, but I also like spicy stuff so a kick is always welcome, and you can get it here. Secondly, I love the staff, and they genuinely seem to love their customers. One member of staff once said to us that they saw most of their clientele more as friends. This may sound like a cliched marketing line, but it was said with such enthusiasm and sincerity that I’d be inclined to believe it. They are attentive and interested and do their upmost to make your time with them enjoyable and memorable. They have even given us free wine and food in the past. One thing I will say is that this can sometimes be slightly overbearing if you’re looking for a quiet, intimate meal for two for example. But they are so nice that it’s hard not to warm to this behaviour, and with there being so many places in this city where waiters/waitresses look and speak to you as you are something they have walked in, I would much rather have the Gingeroot’s enthusiasm for customer service. There is a decent drinks menu, including draught Cobra which is fabulous! The restaurant occupies a very central location so there are plenty of places to go for a drink afterwards. I haven’t awarded it five as I think you can get slightly better food, and slightly better décor(five out of five means perfection in my book, and there are very, very few places that merit that). But absolutely and thoroughly recommended.
