Aha, a bit of culture! Lovely European recipes, tomatoes, peppers and garlic, sangria, good wine! Shame that we have to go to either the Odyssey(*shudder*) or Victoria Square for our enjoyment. I’m not a fan of vast shopping centres in general. But, the interiors of both of La Tasca’s restaurants are very nice indeed. Then there’s the food! Right up my street. The menu recommends four or five per person, at around 3 or 4 quid each. I reckon I could probably demolish 10 to 12. Chorizo in red wine, seafood paella, awesome patatas bravas(be careful — lots of chilli involved). Bloody hell, there really have been some awful reviews of this place. Either I have no powers of observation and cannot be trusted, or I have been very lucky indeed. I suspect(hope, rather) that it’s the latter.

La Tasca claim to be a blend of everything which is great about Spanish cuisine, style and hospitality, creating a unique, authentic atmosphere. Their claims their speciality tapas — «those mouth-watering individual dishes which make dining as flexible and sociable as you could wish it to be, all within a welcoming, rustic ambience». This is all well and good but at the end of the day, this is a chain restaurant and the ambience is kind of painted on the walls. There is nothing the matter with that, but to claim it has any sort of authenticity is a bit silly. The food is nice enough and there are always deals and specials on so you can get a real bargain if you go at basically any time of the week. The staff are dead on enough, nothing groundbreaking but certainly not as bad as some other places. Overall, you can’t really be bad to this place.

Ive got mixed feelings about this place as the couple of times I’ve been here ave been different! There is no real consistency. The first time we were doing a spot of shopping and seen that the offered Tapas for two for a tenner! Bargain! So in we went and had a really nice meal. There was lots to chose from and the food was of good quality. So we went back afew weeks later and went for the same offer, only this time it was a bit bland? It was busy though this time so I’m perhaps guessing that the kitchen can’t handle a large quantity of customers? Or perhaps they were having an off day? I will go back just because it was so good the first time so only time will tell if I’ll make it a regular haunt!

I’m sorry to have to leave Judith C all on her own with the praise of La Tasca but my experience has been very similar to the other reviewers! I went in on a Thursday where they have an offer of any amount of dishes for £10. This seems to good to be true, but when you actually get down the food, it really is about quality not quality. The sauces were either very bland and the food tasted like nothing or very sharp and over powered everything it covered. With tapas, you usually find at least a few things you like, but I really couldn’t…well the wine was nice, but it cost more than the food!

What is going on with these other reviews? My experience of La Tasca seems to be totally different. The first thing worth noting is that, yes, it is expensive if you pay full price, but they ALWAYS(and that’s not an exaggeration) have an offer on. Usually it’s 50% off your bill, but sometimes it’s tapas for two for £10, which in my book makes it really reasonable! I also love the sangria and the service has always been great when I’ve been in. The last time was particularly good. The waiter serving us(a party of 7) was really attentive and always made sure we had enough drink, which is really all I need…

Apparently there are two La Tascas, separated by the River Lagan. One in the Odyssey which has had great reviews, and the one I went to in Victoria Square, which how shall we put it, was less than impressive. Firstly we waited to be seated at the door. I figured the procedure was to walk and wait. It turned out we had to see ourselves because there was no one about. Then while we sat at a table, some lady came over and asked us are we here for food… No, Madame, we are here to speak to the President. Have you got his number? Turned out she hadn’t. We then were given menus and after much deliberation, we decided to order some paella Valencia. And so we waited to order. And waited some more. And because we waited nearly ten minutes while people were chatting, we got up and left. Cannot comment on the food because we didn’t quite get that far. But the staff are horrendous and I will not go back purely because of them.

I went to La Tasca last night with my girlfriend before starting the night off and I have to say that neither of us were very impressed by it. It just seems very over priced for what you get and the frustrating thing I feel is that with a few tweaks and bit more effort the standard could be so much better. I got the paella with chicken and chorizo sausage and was expecting alot more from it. It was a reasonably sized portion but had hardly any of the meat that I ordered, making it more like a plate of rice… and not very well heated! My girlfriend had a portion of chicken wings as she wasnt very hungry, but despite her lack of appetite the fact that she ate only two wings said more about the greasiness of the food presented to her rather than anything else. Altogether an unsatisfactory experience that ensured that another visit through choice will not be happening any time soon!

Very nice staff, horrible food. As a vegetarian I was, at first, pleased to find they had lots of veggie tapas on offer. Yuk. Anything deep fried had been deep fried with whatever they’d used to deep fry the fish. Everything tasted of fish(even if you’re not a veggie, that’s got to be nasty). Food very greasy and somethings were obviously microwaved. Maybe the meat dishes were nicer but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone because it’s not cheap. I don’t like giving bad reviews but feel I should warn vegetarians in particular. the wine was really really nice! And like i said the staff were really nice too.
