My friend celebrated a big birthday here at the weekend and it was lovely, the food was pre ordered ahead of time so no faffing, trying to work out everyone’s order, and the food arrived very promptly. Whilst the restaurant was not that big it still sat all 20 of us comfortably down the back away from other diners(probably for the best as a few of us got a bit loud). The food was lovely and good value for money with their evening special menu. It’s not somewhere I would think of to go for dinner but I’m glad I now know what it’s like as I will definitely be back. My one criticism of the place is whilst the main servers were lovely, friendly and attentive, the main girl(possibly the manager?) was quite abrasive and cold, and at one point I thought we were in a classroom being shouted at when somebody took the wrong plate and they had mixed up their pre order. She wasn’t very happy about it, but it’s easily done when you order in advance! She didn’t put me off coming back here though!

I had a rare free Sunday — all to myself — bliss! Hence I decided to take myself out for a full day of walking, listening to music, reading and of course coffee drinking and eating. My first stop was Yum in Stranmillis for a vegetarian breakfast fry. It was nice but nothing special. Potato bread, soda bread, mushrooms, eggs and hash brown. As is often the case with veggie breakfasts it was seriously lacking. So many restaurants, Yum included, just ditch the meat and don’t replace it with anything. It was seriously lacking some vegetarian sausages, fried halloumi or just something else! On the plus side the Americano coffee was great and service was pleasant enough, although the waitress never did bring the ketchup I asked for. The free wifi didn’t seem to be working either(even though I asked for the password twice). All in all it was ok. I wouldn’t rush back for breakfast but might give Yum another go for an evening meal if friends really wanted to try it.

Their specials are very reasonably priced and the quality is great. Definitely worth a visit.

Yum is a modern little restaurant on the Stranmillis Road, very close to the Lyric Theatre. As we were heading to the theatre we decided to give their ‘2 Course Lyric Pre Theatre menu’ a try(or was it the ‘2 Course Early Bird Menu’? No matter, they’re practically identical anyway). Whilst the food was very nice, there were a few points that really let them down in my eyes and I won’t be back. Firstly, the starter I ordered was described on the menu as ‘Garlic & ginger chicken with wok fried greens’ but what I actually got was a small plate full of noodles(which I can’t eat and so would never have willingly ordered), about 3 small pieces of chicken and a small side salad. No wok fried greens to be seen. I suspect I ended up with the starter from their main menu called ‘Garlic & ginger chicken with wok fried seasame and chilli noodles’ — not the same thing actually people. For my main course I had noted the special offer at the bottom of the pre-theatre/early bird menu(«Tuesday Night is Steak Night — 12oz Sirloin served with mushrooms, onions and choice of side only £11.95») and so, being Tuesday, I ordered that. Firstly they came back to tell me that, actually, I wasn’t allowed to have my first choice of side dish(apparently«choice of side» really means«choice of side from the left-hand column of available sides» — perhaps something to clarify?) but fair enough, that was only a minor inconvenience. However what really annoyed me was when the bill came and they charged me £10.95 plus a £4 supplement for the steak(which is the usual, non-Tuesday price). When I queried this they told me that their steak offer meant that you only get the one course(i.e. just the steak, no starter) for £11.95. Interesting, given that the offer appears on the bottom of a menu proclaiming itself to be a «2 Course» menu… surely it makes sense that the special offer would therefore be to reduce the usual price of £14.95 for both courses to £11.95 for one night only? But apparently no, at least not according to the openly rude guy at the till. I paid it rather than argue in front of the whole restaurant but it has definitely put me off returning. Either they need to clarify their menu or they need to educate their staff(and give them some customer service training while they’re at it). In their favour I will say that the girl who took our order was polite and attentive, the food was very nice and you get decent portions… but when you leave a restaurant feeling more ripped off and annoyed than relaxed and satisfied, it’s hardly a ringing endorsement.

Although the restaurant’s name sets it up for a theoretically near-impossible standard, it lives up to such a lofty name. I went there with my mom and a family friend, who recommended it. On the topic of lofty expectations, one would think that the globally-inspired menu would render the cuisine less-than-stellar/a jack of no trades, but this did not occur. I had the Sicilian chicken, which was essentially a thin chicken breast topped with a lush tomato purée, and I guess Parma ham in between, though it far from overpowered the dish. The chicken was tender and delicious! I hate a plain, gross chicken breast(who doesn’t?), and it was fabulous. Special mention for the mushrooms on the side, which came with a more-than-light sautee, ultimately giving them a quasi-caramelized flavor. Mmmmm. The one less-than-perfect feature of this restaurant was that the staff wasn’t super friendly, asking my friend if she was done twice(one time each from a total of two waiters). They could’ve coordinated that better, especially when you consider that the restaurant is on the smaller side, and that the lack of a wait belied any need to «turn tables.» Still, the next time I’m in Belfast(I hope soon), if I don’t try a new restaurant, I’ll probably give this cute place a whirl!

I’ve been in here a couple of times and it’s surprisingly nice actually. I say surprisingly because you don’t really expect a restaurant tucked away on the Stranmillis Road to serve you anything that great. The last time I was in was just this week, when I went for breakfast with some friends. The fry was delicious, not too much and overall good value for money. I also couldn’t really have any complaints about the service either. The whole place had a pretty relaxed feel to it, and was pretty busy for a Monday morning — must be a good sign!

Wow! Never before has a restaurant lived up to its name! I called in here for a solo lunch afew days ago and decided to sample their early bird menu, served from 12−5pm daily. They offer two courses for just £6.95! Hard to beat! The menu is quite big and I decided to go for the new potato halves with bacon, onion and melted cheese. and OMG the garlic dip that came with this awesome starter was so good I was nearly going to ask where it came from or how to make it! Then came the sizzling Fajitas which were oh so yummy and they weren’t shy with the portions either, also serving those lovely new potatoes with them! I had a glass of house white along with my meal which was only £2 a glass with this menu. seriously, this place rocks! They also have upstairs seating which can cater for larger parties. Love, love, love it!

I know what you’re thinking, does it live up to its name? Yes, it does indeed. It’s a friendly, welcoming and warm bar/restaurant, and the food is really enjoyable, as is the atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff. I’ve eaten here a couple of times and I’ve never felt let down or disappointed. The food is really funky and a bit different, as is the décor and ambience — you feel like they’ve made the effort to give you a good dining experience — and they’ve succeeded. The Peking Duck with mini pancakes is really lovely, as is the lasagne — I LOVE lasagne and this one didn’t let me down. Really worth a visit and they do early bird menus too that are a great bargain.

Yum is situated in the bustling heart of Stranmillis, an area populated by NI’s premier class country folk studying at Queens University. The décor is bright and simple, you are always made to feel welcome whether your feeding a hangover with their thrifty lunch time specials(£6.95 for a starter and a main between 12pm — 5pm Mon-Fri) or eating from the a la carte menu trying to impress whoever’s sitting opposite as best as you can on a student loan! The staff are friendly with a good knowledge on all things yummy(pun intended!). They were proud to tell my friends and I about their free range local produce bought in so fresh it could almost wave at you on its way to the kitchen. Everything is cooked to order so changing a meal to suit a vegan/vegetarian friend is never a problem. If you do decide to pay this little gem a visit try the roast stuffed crackling loin of pork. Its chorizo and apple sauce glaze is so nice I could drink a pint of it!

Yum is a great place to visit for food and drinks in the Stranmillis area. The serving staff are all very efficient and pleasant. It’s a rewarding place for a rest if out an about in the vicinity. Yum is a bar restaurant, so you can pop in for a drink or a few or something to eat — a meal of one to three courses. Yum downstairs gives the impression of a café-bar, but really this is definitely a restaurant bar, and a nice and relaxing one. There is a further upstairs area which I haven’t seen. By the type of menu and the standard of food, this really is a restaurant rather than a café or café-bar — not really a place for snacks unless you want a starter by itself. The downstairs area is compact though, but certainly nice and comortable. I found the food delicious from the cosmpolitan, diverse menu — strongly Mediterreanean influenced recipes, Irish cooking and both Eastern and Mexican style cooking. It’s not that I’m saying just that I couldn’t fault the food or the place, their Mediterranean style recipes were so good I found myself returning each week to eat here, certainly when in Stranmillis during the day once a week, but also travelling up from central Belfast. And I was looking forward to the next visit as soon as my leaving time approached. I am vegetarian. While there is not a large selection for vegetarians, there are always two or three options from the starter and the main course. I fell in love with some of these and so would return very often even if vegetarian choices are not developed further. There has been a great value menu for around 6 pounds — 2 lunch courses, where lunch time is any time between 12 midday and 5 p.m. I found it a great place to retreat to after classes or engagements and enjoy the wonderful food, relaxing. The wine selection is not large, bu it’s very good and quite affordable. Their New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is a really good wine. On St Patrick’s Day this year I went with some family. There was a special menu that day, no lunch specials, so I had a vegetarian Mexican Fajita, which was very good. My parents enjoyed their more traditional Irish recipe meals also. I had a bottle of Italian Pinto Grigio wine, whichwas a good experience and reasonably priced.
