Bostin chop shop. Cracking cut. Book, or don’t book, they’ll wiz you in. Free hours parking right outside. They take cards, £12ish for a great trim. Northern soul on the speakers, retro memorabilia on the walls.

After being well overdue a haircut for a number of weeks, I decided to check out Ace Face on the recommendation of fellow Unilocal’er Manoj K. Ace Face is a little different to other barber shops /hairdressers as it specialises in retro styles, 50s quiffs and 60s mod cuts. Now I wouldn’t say my current hairstyle is particularly retro, but I’ve always been a fan of the 60s mod style, and the décor of the shop absolutely aches 50s/60s cool, the walls littered with memorabilia and screen printed posters. The guys inside make sure the sharp look is carried on in their attire, blazers and waistcoats all round and its a friendly place to walk into with a real laid back atmosphere. As for my haircut, new guy Simon did a fantastic job. He made sure he knew exactly what I wanted and then carried it out with painstaking attention to detail. To make it even better, the whole thing came to £12.99! Change from £15 for a high quality gents restyle(yes it had gotten that bad, I had even done a bit of previous ‘modification’ myself after an incident involving some expanding sealant foam…) is getting harder and harder to find, especially in the city centre. Ace Face sells themselves on their cut throat shaves and retro hair styling, but on the evidence of my last visit they’re certainly no one trick ponies. In a word, Ace.

. When you visit Ace Face, it isn’t just a place where Men go to have a simple hair cut or beard trim. It really is an experience. Like stepping back into the world of Quadrophenia and taking all the best parts of 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s pop culture and displaying them proudly all over the walls of the shop. I really find looking at all the memorabilia so nostalgic and makes the time sat waiting to see one of the immaculately dressed barbers very short. Even one of the hairdryers I notice had a black and white two tone print on it! Ace Face certainly isn’t style over substance. I visit the barbers to have my beard neatened and the attention and care they give to my face is second to none. Lots of time is dedicated to the trim using a range of different equipment to make sure I leave the barbers feeling like a new man. Highly recommended gents!
