I like Arcadian Palace because it has a real air of authenticity about it; this place produces proper Chinese food for a customer base which is largely made up of Chinese people themselves. There is no pretence here, no semblance of any kind of gimmick just good quality Chinese food made with real warmth, passion and care. There are bigger and bolder Chinese eateries in Birmingham but I have a real soft spot for Arcadian Palace and I think upon visiting there, you will too.

Situated next to one of my favourite Chinese restaurants, Arcadian Palace had quite an establishment to compete with — and well, my experience with them didn’t lead to me changing my loyalties. However, it is a very nice restaurant with a varied(but slightly boring) menu and a pleasant, intimate atmosphere — it just lacked the magic of my favourite oriental restaurant. My food was delicious, a yuk sung starter and crisp pork and noodles for my main which amounted to a 10 pound bill with drinks, pretty cheap from my experience. It’s a nice place, with nice food and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, but I’m afraid my heart has always been with Café Soya.

You can always tell it’s going to be a quality chinese take away by the amount of chinese people eating there. Everytime I’ve been here or even walked past there’s always people in here eating. Although this is only a small take away restaurant(you can also eat inside or outside if the weather’s OK), the food is really tasty especially the noodles. If we go to the Arcadian for a couple of drinks after work, we always pop in here to get a quick chicken and noodle take away which is really reasonable at around £4. Great place for a quick chinese before the nights drinking begins.

This little Chinese diner is located a couple of doors down from the amazing Caffe Chino, in the Arcadian. On first glance it looks a bit grubby but this is just because the décor is so bland and dated. Once you enter, you will find that the place is actually very clean. The lady who served us was really friendly. I opted for Singapore style vermicelli, which was delicious and pretty cheap at just £5.80. Most of the dishes are around a fiver so I would definitely return to try something different, although the menu wasn’t that inspiring.
