Instead of rambling on I will just do a pros and cons list. Pros: Great city center location, you are literally just off the high street. Quiet. Although it’s right on the high street my room barely had any noise from the street. Tea and coffee making facilities. Reasonably priced drinks at the bar Cheap considering the location. Cons: Filthy. The lounge might look plush but my room was filthy. I found two chewing gums stuck on the headboard but after I let reception know they send the cleaners in and fully cleaned the room to a okay standard. Tired. The décor and carpets look like they’ve been there for the best part of a decade. The carpet in my room was worn near the walls and with visible patches. To conclude it’s a budget hotel and you get exactly that.Cheap. If you’re just looking for a place to put your head down for a night or two on the cheap then it’s fine but other than that there is nothing to make it desirable. I am due to visit Birmingham again soon and if it’s improved since my stay I will update my review.

This hotel has to be one of the worst I have stayed in apart from another in London. Looks like it needs to be demolished and built back up from the ground upwards. This was used for a night out in Birmingham(nothing heavy just casual) and even after a few drinks it did not improve. Beds were uncomfortable. Room was a state just really dingy and dark and the TV barely worked. Price was cheap so I guess we got what we paid for and made a very early and quick exit the next morning.

Not even a 1 star. Avoid like the plague!!! This has to be the most revolting hotel I have ever had the misfortune of spending the night in. Although a nice reception/lobby area, the rest of it just needs demolishing, and soonish. Damp rooms that give off a nauseating aroma, uncomfortable beds with mattresses like crackers, HOLES in curtains that resemble chewed up mess — like dogs have been chewing on them, miserable furniture and out dated attire & décor! Most of the staff look depressed, and everywhere you look you notice how unhygenic it is — the place needs a super clean! No WIFI in rooms — you have to sit with your laptop in reception, or by the bar on the 2nd floor! Just revolting that this city center hotel next to the revamped New St station represents my city. Vile. Just Vile.

I attend quite a few meetings in my line of work; I attended one here six months ago and I have to say it was the worst hotel I have ever had the misfortune to visit. The room was poky and badly in need of refurbishment. The loos were a long walk away and weren’t particularly decent when we got there. They provided a buffet lunch in the room, but it was below par. The whole floor we were on felt as though it had not seen a decorator since at least the 1960s …and then there were the staff, who really seemed as though they had been sentenced to work there as a result of some minor felony and were simply serving out their time. The particular combination of rudeness and unhelpfulness they displayed must have taken some considerable effort to perfect. Well, you get the message: avoid this place like the plague. It may be close to New Street but then so is the pavement outside the station

I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels in Birmingham in my time, the Britannia amongst them. I booked in here because I had an early start from the station(which is close by), but should have heeded the booking company as they suggested I avoid it! The main upside of the hotel is that it is incredibly centrally located, close to New Street station and right in the centre of the shopping area. The other upside is that, if you book far enough ahead, they do have some very competitive room deals(from about £40, room only). The main downside is that the rooms are in serious need of refurbishment.(The public areas have been refurbished). It’s true that some have been redecorated, but the bathrooms need a complete overhaul. Similarly, the windows need replacing with high quality double-glazed units to reduce noise and(in my room) draughts. The window area had a faint smell of damp. The second downside is noise: many of the rooms are situated around a light-well, and you can see straight across into others’ rooms, as well as hear their noise. Mine had an air-conditioning unit outside, which clattered happily through the night(fortunately, I had taken the precaution of bringing ear-plugs). The furniture was OK, if a little battered, and the room cleaning was just about tolerable — again, OK, but could have been much better. Breakfast was similarly OK, just: get down early if you want your food hot, as it’s a pre-prepared buffet. It’s possible they were quiet when I stayed, so that the food was not replenished, but luke-warm scrambled eggs are not a good way to start the day. The staff seemed OK, if a little disinterested. It’s all a pity, really: some imaginative management and refurbishment should see this hotel thrive from its location.

Large Hotel which is handy for New Street Station and the main city centre shops. If booking ahead, rooms can be reasonable although prices increase very quickly! Having stayed at the hotel a number of times I can say that the cleanliness of the rooms is very variable, on occasion debris has been left over from the previous occupant. Breakfast if not included in room price is quite expensive and the quality of food is not great, it is often cold and has obviously been standing for a while — you’d probably be best off getting breakfast elsewhere. However, the bar is very reasonably priced especially before 7 pm and staff service has always been very good.

Large city centre hotel, within a few seconds of the main train station(New Street), currently under going a refurbishment so upper floors are still in very good condition while the lower ones show evidence of the on going works. Rooms are reasonably priced at around £60 a night though deals are avaliable when booking ahead or online. Containing all you might reasonably need for a night or two away from home, on several stays I have been impressed by the staffs willingness to help and the over all clenliness of the property, though somewhat unimpressed by the food offerings. If you are in certain rooms you maybe lucky enough to get a jacuzzi bath which was an unexpected luxury.

Reasonable room for a stay. Definitely not the best but the location is good. The breakfast is the biggest disappointment. Luke warm and rubbery.(Buffet style). Why don’t the cook fresh? Just as easy or make very much smaller servings which are put out and top up more often.
