Situated away from the main strip of takeaways in Selly Oak, Dolphin serves a range of tasty meals. From traditional fish and chips, to pies and burgers, I have never had a bad meal from this shop. Their chips are the best to be found in the area. I would recommend heading there early on a Friday or Saturday evening(before 6), as the long queues are a testament to the high quality of their meals. Whilst the prices aren’t the lowest you can find in Selly Oak, the small extra cost is most definitely worth it, as the portions are literally gigantic. If you can finish a cheeseburger and large chips, you’re a better man than I. The queue is a small downside, but at least it’s in a warm shop, surrounded by the kinds of enticing aromas that only good British fish and chip shops seem able to produce.

This fish and chip shop offers all the normal things you’d expect from a local chippy and the food is always fresh. The staff are friendly and there is a TV in the corner to while away the time you spend in the queue — which can often be 10 or 15 minutes as this is a very busy outlet doing a brisk trade, particularly around the 7pm-9pm window. They offer meal deals on certain combinations — such as a Mini Fish and Chips + Mushy Peas(or Curry Sauce) for a fairly reasonable £2.50 — which represent a good feed for a small price. I would avoid going later than 10pm as they tend to wind down the operation around then(fairly understandable!) and so nothing new gets cooked. All in all a pretty good local fish and chip shop!

In the complex and increasingly diverse world of modern fast food, it’s easy for the classic chip to be forgotten or marginalised. In fact, many fast food joints seem to have abandoned the classic fat and greasy British chip in favour of the ever mundane American style French Fries(I’m not convinced there’s anything French bout them at all but that’s a debate for another occasion). However, Dolphin Fish Bar still serve chips in the original, and my opinion, the best way, with a reputation amongst the locals as the best place to go for traditonal chips. The shop has won awards for them. The fish is also great. They do some kebabs and burgers which are perfectly edible, but personally, I’d go for the chips as the chips are the specialist dish here, effectively. Presentation is bright and enthusiastic. A great little fish and chip shop.

Absolutely fantastic fish and chip shop. Food is really really nice and staff are always very friendly. Can be very busy on a Friday so get there before 6 if you can. prices can be a bit more thank usual if you don’t have the deals but worth every penny! 4 star due to slightly higher pricing
