High Tide has a lot of competition in the Kings Heath area. The fact that it often has customers pouring out of the door shows that they are not queuing for nothing. High Tide offers the cheapest range of kebabs in the area. Chose from Doner, Chicken, Shish and the filthy mix(all of them together) You also have the option of having your meat served in a Pita, Nan or a wrap. I would personally go for the Nan as it is cooked to perfection in a Nan oven, ones only usually used by Indian Restaurants. The Nan comes out of the Nan oven with a butter cup gleam across its face. It always puts a smile on mine. «Mary had a little lamb, I ate the lamb.» This is the slogan on the back of one of the employees weathered t-shirts. I don’t like to think about the animal I’m eating, so I must say that this put me off a little. High Tide is open very late, I once walked past at 4.30am and they were still serving kebabs. A great place to visit after the pub, the portion sizes will soak up that excess alcohol in your system to eradicate any hangover that was in the post.

The chip shop rivalry in Kings Heath is almost as fierce as that between its two main football clubs. Yes, there are fifteen places that you can buy chicken and chips either on or just off the High Street between Kings Heath Library and Sainsburys, but the main competition between places selling this kind of fare is between King Kebab and Hi-Tide. The staff are humourous and well-natured with customers, but they are equally firm with drunkards if the levels of rowdiness exceed acceptability. This place is always the last to be open, which is convenient if you are after some filth at 5am. I’ve never eaten there that late as around this time there are usually only a few tired pieces of fried food around in the heated cabinet, and I’m wondering how long they might have been around. There is a meal here called a ‘Stu Special’, concocted by Kings Heath bass guitar player Stuart Mack that is sure to fill the hungriest of drunken tums on the way back from The Station.

You should know before reading this review that when it comes to Hi Tide I am unapologetically biased. This is quite simply my favourite fish and chip shop in the whole of Birmingham! I’m not suggesting that its chips or kebabs are the best in the Birmingham area but put simply a drunken trip to this eatery is a must for any Birmingham resident or visitor. The staff here are amongst the friendliest people I have been fortunate enough to encounter in my entire life, they make an effort to converse with every customer who enters and they should be commended for doing such a fantastic job. Hi Tide on a Friday or Saturday evening is awash with drunken Brummies desperate for a greasy late night fix and the staff handle the unique problems this throws up with aplomb, keeping everyone happy and ensuring waiting times are more than reasonable. Finally in terms of value for money Hi Tide is king and for the penny savers amongst you I’d recommend Latino chips; a portion of chips with salad and a generous helping of chilli sauce which for as long as I can remember has been priced at just one pound!
