Reasonably priced guinness, football, good colcannon, always a free spot but never empty. It’s not the most fancy place. And there are a couple of really really good independent pubs around. Still, I always enjoyed going there. It’s just nice.

Being half Irish, I often like to pop in here for a quick half a Guiness with blackcurrant. it’s surprisingly tasty! I have to admit that it doesn’t have the greatest Irish atmosphere, I blame the fact its slap bang in the middle of Broad Street. However, the guys behind the bar are super friendly(maybe they’re all drunk on Guiness?) and always make effort to chat to you. The best thing about this pub is that they have a lunch time menu where meals are only £3.49 each. I tend to go for the Peri Peri chicken breast with chips and peas but I hear the chicken and mushroom crockpot is pretty tasty too as my friends always opts for that one.

«Do pubs in Ireland all look like this?» was the first though that entered my head when I walked into O’Neil’s last week for lunch on a Saturday. I seemed to remember booths being here before, now replaced by dining tables and chairs. The ambience was mellow and appetizing, the staff friendly and helpful. They didn’t have a large selection of ales so I went with a well pored pint of Guinness. That certainly hit the spot. The menus looked like they were mass produced for every O’Neil’s in the country. I was later informed that this was the case, yet it did not ruin the experience at all, I just anticipated that my meal would be cooked in a microwave and a grill as opposed to any oven or pan fry cooking. I had the Classic Irish Burger and my girlfriend had the Sausage and Mash. My classic burger had that grilled state to it, which I found to be quite pleasant. My girlfriends sausage and mash was nice, it came with 3 sausages and colcannon mash. I tasted her gravy and it was a bit salty, however the sausages were nice and juicy and put a big smile on her face. All in all quite a nice dining experience, one I would probably do again.

This is a haven if you like good guiness and it is fairly easy to get served as the bar is reasonably big. The pub gets busy quickly but there are quite alot of seats and a heated area outside for those who want to pollute their lungs. The beer is well priced compared to some pubs in Moseley with the Guiness being 2.70 ish and again the food is well presented and fairly cheap. Its your usual bog standard burgers and salads but they are good sized portions.
