I was first introduced to Caribbean cuisine after a friend bought food from Russells, which is apparently well-known in the West-Indian community in Birmingham. And after tucking in to their friend chicken, I understand why! The batter was crisp and the chicken was amazingly succulent. It was well seasoned and a generous portion of meat for the price you pay! The dumplings were equally as delicious with a crisp exterior and moist interior. Unlike most fast-food eateries, the food tasted very fresh and hot. If it had been re-heated then it didn’t show in the flavour. The staff members are very jovial and full of playful banter. This seems to appeal to their customers, some of whom were simply sitting around as though it was a community hub! The place is generally clean but I wouldn’t call it pristine. Then again — isn’t that most fast-food places!

Russell’s is my second favourite Caribbean takeaway place in Birmingham. They make great tasting food and what’s best about this restaurant is that their prices for their food is fair. They are not as over-pricey as some Caribbean takeaway places. If you really want a taste of the Caribbean and crave some authentic tasting jerk chicken or rice and peas; I’d recommend you visit Russell’s. I go there once in a while when I’m looking to taste a little soul food, so I purchase some of my favourite dishes. I like the way they cook their curry goat and fish soup so that’s what I normally go to Russell’s to buy and all my Caribbean friends make fun of me because I normally always order the same thing. I’ve even been asked by the staff– who are very friendly; whether I’m going to order anything new. My order also ends with a dumpling added to my meal because dumplings are just so tasty. This restaurant has a large sit down area; so if you’d like to sit in there and eat you can do so. I’ve always been there when it’s packed and I’ve never seen the place not full of a couple of customers at least. Like I said, I think it’s the prices which make people continue visiting Russell’s.

When it comes to food there is nothing that beats good and I mean GOOOOD soul food. Soul food is what Mamma cooks and Russell’s Caribbean Takeaway does it just like she does. If you want the true taste of Caribbean cooking Russell’s is the place to go. The menu is really tasty offering an excellent selection of traditional Caribbean dishes. Curried Goat, Fish Stew, Oxtail Soup and of course Chicken, Rice & Peas are just some of the most popular delights. Snacks include Lamb or beef patties, fried dumplings, plantain, Mmmm I’ve got to stop, I’m salivating all over my keyboard! From the counter you can see the chefs prepare your food in a clean, well equipped kitchen, this always fills me with confidence that what I’m eating is going to be good. Although it’s a Takeaway there is a large seating area where you’re welcome to eat in, there’s no waiter/waitress service so you’re responsible for clearing your table once you’ve finished. A full take away dinner(and they are healthy portions) will cost £6.00. If you’re looking for a real taste of the Caribbean, this place is a must. When the Jamaican Olympic team come to Birmingham in a few months I wouldn’t be surprised to find them at Russell’s.
