A popular student destination for those fond of an Indian dish. Definitely worth a visit for anybody who lives close by. I visited enthusiastically maybe a little too exuberant for my own good, I ordered the Chicken Naga. The beautiful meal became addictive much to the amusement of other customers in the restaurant as I intensely dug in to my spicy dish. I was convinced I had to complete the challenge I had set myself. I started to sweat and people watched by to see if I could conquer the quest of this red hot recipe. I couldn’t stop and I did finish it and I am sure it wasn’t a pretty sight but I seemed to have made people’s night, I felt as though I had my own series of Man V Food. Lovely restaurant and understanding staff who continuously asked me if I seeked water when my mouth was on fire.

You are never at a loss for Indian food in Birmingham but if you can’t make it out to the balti triangle or you are a Selly Oak local I strongly recommend Sundarbon. Located on the Bristol Road(the main high street running through Selly Oak) and just a stones throw from The University, Sundarbon is a favourite with locals and students alike and it’s easy to see why. Friendly staff, pleasant and cosy environment, an ambiguous closing time(‘late’ is the official word), and very reasonable prices despite the great quality of the food. Personally, I’ve never been disappointed, whether I have eaten at the restaurant or ordered food for delivery. Also, vegans take note, when my vegan friends are in town Sundarbon is always the first place they want to eat, that has got to be a good recommendation!

One of the many Indian restaurants located on Bristol Road, Sundarbon has a very unusual claim to fame. Various newspaper clippings around the front entrance tell discerning passers-by that the takeaway is the favourite of pop bands such as Liberty X, and that they used to pay to have Sundarbon food flown out personally to them. Obviously, this is a big statement, particularly in a city so famed for its Indian cuisine. However, judging by my dining experiences, the quality of the food has followed the same downward trajectory as Liberty X’s career. The food is well priced, as would be expected given its location at the end of one of the most populated student roads in the area, but the food itself doesn’t live up to its celebrity billing, with a common(and unusual) complaint being that the curry tastes too sugary. Worth a go if only to say that you’ve been to a pop group’s favourite Indian, but there are much better choices nearby, such as the Royal Orchid.
