This is no humble pie shop, this petite place is packed with handmade handsome pastry goodness. Popped in on Christmas Eve and tucked into a Steak n Stilton pie with a side of cheddar mash, twoz bostin, n around £6. You can take a seat inside, outside or take away. They have around a dozen different pies n half a dozen sides to choose from. Great for a quick lunch pitstop when racing around Bullring. Good value, great great gravy.

In a small unit on the Bullring ‘street’ between the Rotunda and St. Martin’s church, Urban Pie is a good place to grab a quick bite to eat. Select from a dozen different pies(including a few vegetarian), add mash, veg, and/or gravy, eat on one of the benches inside or outside, or take your pie to go. The pies are, like the place, ‘compact’, but at about £4 per pie you can’t argue with the size. They probably won’t be the best pies you’ve ever tasted, but they’re always good, nice pastry, good ratio of filling: pastry, no soggy bottoms. The clincher is the Bake Sale after 5pm Monday to Friday when all pies are half-price. That’s £2 for a pie which must be the best value in the city. They have a small selection of bottled beers(Stella, Peroni) and soft drinks. They do a student deal(pie, mash, veg and gravy for £4.95) and bacon baps in the morning.

I went here last week, when it was pouring with rain and I was soaked through and totally shattered. The restaurant definitely has a fast food feel about it that wasn’t too appealing but I was starving so ready to give it a go. The staff were lovely, very friendly and talkative, the vegetarian pies are also egg free so that was a great start. The pies looked great, I picked out a mushroom and asparagus pie. Me and my sister ordered a side of mashed potato with each of ours, and it was nearing the end of the day he gave us both free gravy too! The pie was amazing! the top pasty was lovely buttery and crumbly, with a decent amount of filling inside, the mashed potato was very well seasoned and totally lump free… and the whole lot was dripping in lovely salty, herby, hot gravy mmmmm just what I needed! It was great value for money, it worked out at around £7 for a pie, mashed potato and a drink… I think the gravy would only have been £1.20 more, but for the portion size I thought it was very reasonable! Will definitely return on a chilly day, lovely warming food!

It’s quite expensive here — for a pie, sides(horseradish mashed potato and mushy peas) in my case and drink you’re looking at over £8 but obviously it’s fairly substantial food and pretty tasty. Despite trying to look all homemade, there’s a very mass produced feel — stickers on the pies, horseradish sauce decanted onto the mash from a giant plastic bottle. Staff were extremely nice though and it has pleasant indoor and outdoor seating.

This was my first time to Birmingham and I was looking for lunch… after eating loads of free chocolate at Cadbury World… I know, but it really was part of my job. Not a bad gig… as long as the student behave ;). Anyway, it was a chilly day, but sunny so I wanted to be outside. I saw Urban Pie and thought, «Oooo Pie and Mash!» I figured if I was sitting outside it would be a good lunch to keep me warm and also fuel me to shop… until I had to be carried back to the coach by the students. Urban Pie makes pie trendy! Really… having been to pubs, pie usually seems so… dated, but Urban pie seems to update it, especially with a variety of ingredients, including some vegetarian options. And you can take yours away in a box that does not leak or get soggy with all that gravy. I decided to go with the Chicken and Mushroom with a side of mash and gravy. Sides are not included, so the mash will cost a bit extra, but pie is a bit naked without mash and gravy. The pies are a decent size so you will definitely be full after lunch. And it was a good thing I wanted to sit outside… could sit outside because finding a place to sit at the height of the lunch hour is difficult. I opened the pie and mash and saw the steam release into the air… it smelled delicious. While there wasn’t much for fillings inside the pie, I did quite enjoy the pastry. As a connoisseur of sweet pies, I always critique the pastry and often hear Paul Hollywood’s voice in my head uttering, «Soggy bottom.» Oh, have I shared too much? Oops. Anyway it was a fine pastry, the right thickness, no soggy bottom, just wished there had more filling inside. And the mash… well, I saw that others were saying creamy mashed potatoes, but on the day that I had the mash, they had the consistency of instant mashed potatoes. I would still go back and try some of the other pies, but I would hope for one with more filling and probably try some different sides. For the price it is quite the value.

Get £1 off with voucher cloud. Really impressive service. No frills about the menu but who cares. The pies taste fantastic and there’s a great variety. Highly recommended if you like a pie.

I’m a Midlands girl — at what this means is I absolutely LOVE pie. And mash. In massive quantities. So, needless to say, I love Urban Pie — they have a massive range of pie options, and even mash options too. The gravy is vegetarian, and everything comes in neat little eco-friendly cardboard boxes which magically don’t go soggy or spill your food everywhere. I’d quite like them to do more than just one vegetarian pie — or even change up the flavour from time to time, but that said I still think it’s delicious! Their ‘Bake Sale’(5pm onwards) is always a tasty treat — half price pies! Bargain!

No fuss, no frills, just good pies, lashings of gravy and mounds of creamy mashed potato. That’s what you get at Urban Pie, nestled in the heart of the Bullring. It offers a good choice of homemade pies, with fillings ranging from the traditional steak and mushroom to a range of seasonal specialties. There is also a tempting menu of sides, including fluffy mash, mushy peas and Yorkshire pudding. You place your order at the counter and your food is handed to you in a cardboard plate/box. You can choose to sit indoors, on one of the high stools or out on the terrace. It gets busy at lunchtimes, so finding a seat can prove tricky. The tables are also self-clear, so you will often find them in need of a clean. Urban Pie also offer basic breakfast items. This is good and fairly priced comfort food.
