Gresham Blake is Brighton’s most famous bespoke tailors, and for good reason: it offers a huge amount of different materials and cuts to create your perfect suit, as evidenced by the hundreds of testimonials from local and national celebrities. It’s almost too pricey for the common Brightonian, but prices do start quite low, and can be even cheaper if you buy off the rack, and there are some very nice items on there as well! There’s even a women’s section: everything you might need from a bespoke tailors, really. The main problem here is price: these aren’t prices for mortals, I feel. Still, when you enter the shop, you are treated well, even you don’t hand over an American Express Gold card upon entry. However, without the necessary cash, much of what Gresham Blake offers will forever be closed to you. I wish I had the cash to get a tailor made suit here, I’d go for something really original and different(definitely some shades of pink), but that will remain a pipe-dream for some time, I feel. If you have the cash, though, you could do much worse!

A neutral review from me — more for information only. They don’t offer alterations — I just called and checked. Other than that they sound and look very good

If you’ve got a really important event coming up this is the place to come to get fitted out. Nothing beats the figure hugging lines of a bespoke suit, and this place lays claim to being the tastiest outfitter in the city. Celebs like Steve Coogan come here for the lurid looking ties. Aside of the camp bright suits there’s much more restrained classical numbers; pin-stripes that James Bond might order a Martini in, as well as flat caps and Homburg(I think) hats in the corner at the back.

I haven’t worn many suits in my life. I wore this silly looking white one to my high school graduation, and, I think that’s the only suit I’ve ever worn. I’ve combined suit jackets with jeans, suit jackets with dress pants, suit jackets with shorts, but very rarely have I worn a suit. But if I am ever in need of a suit(and have sufficient funds to purchase one) Gresham Blake would definitely be one of the first places I would go The quality displayed here is absolutely exquisite. I was afraid to touch anything, for fear that my greasy hands would have tarnished the material. They really cater to your specific needs here, and it’s really just a fantastic place overall.

If you spot a sharp-dressed man or stylish woman swaggering around Brighton in suits that make Jonathan Ross look like Worzel Gummidge, chances are they got their gear at Gresham Blake. The shop on Bond Street has been setting the pace in menswear for eight years and has now added a womenswear range next door. You can choose your natty threads from the bespoke, made-to-measure or off-the-peg services. The cufflinks are designed by local goldsmith Julian Stephens(who has his own outlet on Gloucester Road) and among the florid ties are items designed by regular customers Steve Coogan and Norman Cook. Coming soon: the new Sussex County Cricket Club Blazer.

My brother got his wedding suit handmade here, and it was a beauty. An electric blue, Italian style suit that made him look as handsome as his younger brother, but not quite. He took me in here to show off the place to me, and I was amazed. I’m not that into suits, and this Unilocal job certainly doesn’t require me to wear one(unless I’ve missed it in the small print) but I was blown away. The crispness and originality of the suits, as well as their stock of handmade shirts and ties was enough to make me think that maybe I could handle the crippling depression of getting a 9 – 5 in some office selling spare parts, as long as I could wear a suit. Expensive, but if your got the cash splash it right here.

If you live in Brighton long enough, you get the ultimate prize– spotting Nick Cave walking through the Laines in his three piece navy suit– long long legged narrow trousers with a bit of flair, sharp narrow jacket, waistcoat. Mr Cave and his suit are a beautiful thing. Waistcoats– there should be more waistcoats, that’s what I always think when I see him striding along. Mr Cave would probably be a beautiful sight in jeans but that suit! It single-handedly makes the case for a well made suit. Now I don’t know if his suit is a Gresham Blake but everytime I walk past their windows I think of the power of the Cave suit and dream of having a suit made in this beautiful tailors. All this dreaming is enhanced by the beauties they always having hanging in the window– stunning tailoring with a modern rock’n’roll twist. I love it. If you can’t afford the suits– they have great bright shirts, ties, socks– all for men AND women.

Ever wanted a suit that makes you feel like a million dollars? If the answer is yes, book an apppointent at Gresham Blake. They specialise in stunning, bespoke and made to measure suits for men and women. Remember the black and white pin striped suit Heather Mills wore in the court case against a certain Beatle? That was a Gresham Blake. As well as offering individual and customised suits, their Brighton shop sells off the peg suits, shirts, silk ties, cravats and cufflinks. They also do a lovely range of silk hankies with ladies in various states of undress. I’d love a black suit with skull and cross bones in the lining but I’m not sure my budget would reach to both arms…
