Situated in the most bohemian quarter the city the New Fabric Fair the first stop for any self respecting fashion student or self makey clothes person. Its absolutely stuffed the gills with fab materials, buttons, accessories pieces, feathers ad ribbon which can make it difficult to navigate around the store. Its always my fave place to pick up stuff for costume parties and festivals. They don’t have a till just a calculator ad a friendly face so bring cash!

I’m really not much of a crafty kind of person. Me and sewing machines certainly don’t have a good relaionship. However, even the likes of me occasionally need to buy some fabric — in my case it’s generally to accessorise some fancy dress outfit or other. Fabric Fair is stacked high with roll after roll of any kind of material you can imagine — it’s hard to see how they fit so much into such a small shop. Prices are really reasonable, and staff are always helpful. They even managed to advise me on how to make a vampire cape.

I really don’t know what this place does come closing time — it’s always chaotically packed full of materials inside, so much so that if someone’s at the till you’ll have difficulty getting anywhere in the shop, and there’s loads of stuff left out on the street during opening times. It is one of the best places to go for material in Brighton though, with much more variety than a chain like Fabric Land. There’s a huge range, including loads of different materials and some vintagey looking patterns. It’s also one of the few remaining independent fabric and haberdashery shops in the area, so well worth supporting.

Situated on Gardner Street the New Fabric Fair is always my first port of call for all my material and costume needs. Its absolutely packed to the rafter with roles of materials and accessories, you cant miss it as the the rolls are stacked up outside a long the pavement. Its a family run business and the staff are all very helpful. Be prepared to squeeze past other customers as it so stuffed with various materials is can be a bit hard to manœuvre around the store. They don’t have a til of card machine so bring cash. They have stacks of ribbons, buttons, iron ons, feathers and loads more fab accessories for glamming up your out fits.

There are two fabric shops in the Laines– Ditto Fabrics and New Fabric Fair. New Fabric Fair is the more chaotic of the two! There is loads of good stuff here– chiffons, cotton prints, wool, tweed– you just need to have a bit of time to hunt through to see what you might uncover. If you despair at finding the exact right fabric for that dress pattern then the staff are super helpful and seem to uncannily know what is piled under what. The chaos extends outside where they have rows of ends of lines that you can get for a bargain– you can negotiate on most prices actually but the stuff out front is really reasonable. They also have an excellent stock of ribbons and finishes. If ordered chaos inspires you then this is the place for you!
