Nom, nom, nom — wild boar and juniper berry sausages! That’s what I had for my tea last night courtesy of Principle meats. Its great to see there are still a number of businesses like this surviving in today’s climate, and London Road seems to be a particular haven for them. I try to support them whenever I can, to me it makes the whole process of food shopping far more enjoyable. As an added bonus, the meats here are good quality AND cheap, and they try to show the sourcing of the meat where possible. The sausages are made on the premises by the son in this family business, and the father is very knowledgeable and happy to give advise and recommendations. If I had had more room in my freezer I would have stocked up on meat products there and then, as it is I will just have to make sure I make more frequent visits to Principle Meats and its London Road neighbours.

It’s always nice to see independent butchers still surviving against the supermarket giants. They also supply a lot of the pubs with their stock. The shop is manned by a bunch of ‘classic’ butcher types who look like they have been in the meat trade for a long time. They have a good selection of cuts to buy at pretty cheap prices and make a lot of good sausages. I would have liked to see a bit more information about the origin of the meat, but the shop is clean and would certainly hold up to any FSA inspection. If you pop in near the end of business you can usually talk yourself into a cheeky discount. I have used better butchers in my time, but if I was in the area and needing something to knock up a meal I know I could do worse than shop at principal.

One of the best parts of the London Road area is the vibrant community of independent businesses, Principal Meats being one of my favourites. Butchers have been forgotten by many, replaced by supermarkets and the imported meats on ofer. At Principal though, you know where your food comes from(it’s all listed, and you can just ask them). They are a family butchers, happy to offer advice and give you a bargain where posible. I regularly come here for mince, sausages and chicken, all of which are at a great price. They’ve recently extended Saturday opening times to mean that you have no excuse for not coming here. Supporting this Sussex award winning butchers is definitely better than Asda.

I love the name Principal Meats, it’s a real no nonsense name. The name does not try and be clever or interesting, it simply just says it how it is. 3 packs of Meat for £4.99, which includes mince, sausages, chicken etc. This deal smashes the Supermarkets, so it’s well worth it for all students especially. The Sausages are I quote my flatmate Edd, a self professed sausage enthusiast and connoisseur«awesome…delicious.»

Sitting directly opposite the road from M & B Meats, I’d recommend Principal Meats to anyone who likes a more traditional Butchers. Sitting somewhere between the Deli at a Sainsbury or Tesco and a more traditional food market, Principal offers decent quality meat at discounted prices, with friendly and approachable staff behind the till to help you with your order. A particularly good deal came in the form of three packs of 600g mince meat… They only cost a fiver. A bit on the fatty side undeniably, but better than Sainsbury’s basics range and ideal for making burgers or curries, where the fat helps cook/flavour your meal. Alternatively you can always brown the mince, and poor the excess fat away… Enough random tips though! A good honest butcher awaits!
