Excellent and friendly service, the food was of excellent quality, although the lamb was a little flavourless. Good selection of wines, and a top quality dessert for a reasonable price. Can’t wait to go back and try out the seafood pasta.

My partner had the fish and chips which he said were the best he had ever had. This alone is probably a reason to come to the Regency. I had the trout amadin which was not the classic French preparation of butter sauce and almonds but a whole fried trout. Not necessarily bad but it came sans sauce and was slightly overcooked. It wasn’t great although the servings were massive.

Exactly what you want in a typical British fish and chip shop, although it would be nice if it was on the beach and not next to the busy main road. Nonetheless, there are great views of the beach, pier and sea from the tables. I think they should stick to what they do best; fish and chips rather than try and please the masses with a bigger menu including roast dinners and pasta — no need. I certainly wouldn’t come here for anything but haddock and chips. While the restaurant is a little dated and has a bit of a grubby/dirty feel with sticky menu’s and cheap tables, crockery and cutlery it all adds to the experience! The batter is just right — crunchy and not too greasy and the fish just melts in your mouth. The chips are classic English chips — fat, soft/a little soggy, but delicious. I always get a side of baked beans as I’m not a fan of mushy peas and you have to smother the plate in salt, vinegar and ketchup! There is nothing more traditional and British and its fantastic.

This is probably the best the fish and chips can get, at least in Brighton I believe. But the place has also lots of other sea treats, so if you are looking for more exquisite meal it should also satisfy your demands. The location must be quite conveniant, although right now as the construction of i360 is still in progress the view of the see is somewhat restricted by lots of cranes and other equipment. But if you prefer to stay indoors, the restaurant has much more places there and the interior is also neat. I got the impression that the staff is a bit fluffy although they were very friendly. Maybe the problem wasn’t really the waiting staff but rather some issues in the kitchen as I saw an announcement that they were looking for an experienced chef. However once the food arrived you are pretty much settled and there is nothing to complain about. And as I said at the beginning, their fish and chips are great. Full stop.

For the price, the food is not great. I ordered an avocado prawns and while the prawns were pretty good, the avocado was hard, fibrous and completely inedible. Then our plates were left on the table until after the main course arrived. We shared a shell fish extravaganza between the two of us, which was quite good. They also charge a 10% service charge, which is a little ridiculous considering how little service we actually received.

The main thing is that it was crazy busy, even early on a Sunday evening. We got enough attention though and the food was ready in good time so no complaints about the service. The atmosphere suffered from the hectic pace that the staff were charging about at but the food was superb!

When you go to the British seaside, one thing springs to mind. Not nudist beaches, or tropical sun… fish and chips! What better way to come celebrate a day and night in Brighton with proper fish and chips. Except, the Regency doesn’t just do fish and chips. It does proper food, numerous different choices of fish with a multitude of different sides available. Something the local chippy can’t facilitate! They also do pickled eggs — BONUS! I opted for the Deep Fried Platter(yes, how unhealthy!), which contained cod, prawns, whitebait, calamari and good old fish fingers, alongside some chips, mushy peas, pickled eggs and curry sauce! The proper way! It was delightful, and to my surprise came only to £8.95 for what one could presume to be a trough!

I guess we’ll start at the beginning… It’s Brighton, it’s about quarter to nine, 0 degrees and we’re starvin’ marvin. The bitter wind nipped at our faces like a small squirrel chomping on a chestnut. 100 yards we paced with nothing but disappointment emanating from the sad and tacky shop-fronts of Brighton’s illustrious seafront. The evening approached the early hours of the midnight and we began to lose hope of finding a fish and chip shop to suit our needs(a casual place, with excellent atmosphere and good food). From our right, a glow of homely light, which beckoned us from the frozen night and into a cosy place where we could have a bite. We were greeted by a fish and chip fairy who fluttered around using her cod-scaled wings. «Arhh wondering travellers are you? What takes your fancy? A table for two?» We nodded and she exclaimed, «To the back we will go, come on through!» Sitting down at our little table, we were met by the one and only Fabio. Who knew he was a waiter in Brighton? We ordered our fish and chips, with the option of different fish(obviously went with cod). It took a long time for the food to come out as some orders got mixed up in the back, but hey, it happens. We were entertained by the family of 6 that seemed to have ordered the entire menu. So, as plate after platter after bowl of food came out for them, we were sitting, hungry and tired for our meal. Finally, with help from our friend, Fabio,(whose famous, long, blonde locks are still impeccably maintained. probably with some sort of argan oil) our food was delivered. The fish was the biggest piece of fish we had ever encountered and we have seen lots of fish in our time, let me tell you. Cutting to the chase(or the tail lol) it was an ok bit of cod, but the batter could have been a little bit crispier and the same really goes for the chips. They were a bit on the soggy side. It felt a bit like it was rushed because they forgot about our order but it still filled the hunger holes that had developed. Not content with being little piggies, we wanted to move up to the realm of being big piggies. We both ordered desserts: one treacle and one brownie. Both were probably thrown into the microwave right after we ordered, but hey, they were alright. In conclusion… it was alright 3 out of 5 stars. Probably would have been 4 if Fabio would have taken the time to sign my book.

I ordered the fish n chips… it was just ‘ok.’ I’ve honestly had better in Brighton. The ambience nonetheless was great, very busy and vibrant.

As three hungry college students, my friends and I were easily lured in by the promise of a full meal– including seafood and chips!- for under 10 pounds. However, the service was so poor we considered challenging the 12.5% service charge. It began with the waiter pressuring us to order a starter after we’d already ordered out mains. When we convinced him we truly just wanted the food we ordered, we enjoyed the beautiful view from our table. The food came out in reasonable time, considering how crowded it was. After three attempts to get silverware(napkins never appeared), we tucked into delicious, fresh seafood– salmon/chips/salad, prawn spagetti, and garlic prawns/chips/salad for myself. After a few bites, however, the waiter came back and removed my plate(mid-bite), saying it was for someone else. I told him is already touched and eaten part of the food; I was told it didn’t matter. 5 minutes later, the same plate was brought back with the right number of prawns this time(according to the waiter). The good was very good, but by no means the best seafood I’ve ever tasted. The chips were a bit sub-par, but good still because they’re chips. Our plates were removed perhaps 10 minutes after we finished. Then the waterjug. Then the catsup, etc. Our attempts to ask for the check we’re all ignored. 30 minutes later, the waiter asked of we wanted dessert. We said no. ANOTHER30 minutes later, one of my friends actually had to go find the waiter and ask for the check. 15 minutes later, we finally had the check carelessly tossed on the table without a second glance. Overall: solid food, great price, gorgeous location– dreadful service, perhaps particularly for those without the budget for starters and desserts. Can’t earnestly recommend.

I was hoping for better, why places like this take custom for granted? Fish full of bones, with skin left on, disappointing.

This restaurant is full of crumbly charm and stunning views over Brighton seafront, situated on the corner of Regency Square, it was one I sadly overlooked. The outside and décor put me off. For a city by the sea — there ain’t many good fish and seafood eateries around! Especially not reasonably priced ones! We have so much gaudy tat along our coast, I lumped the Regency Restaurant in to this category. It doesn’t look as if it’s had a good lick of paint in a good few many years, but this adds to the authentic humbleness of the place. Came here for a spot of light lunch and was pleasantly surprised by warm, friendly waiters, tasty coffee and good, honest, hearty food. I went for 2 starters of a prawn cocktail and moules mariniere. Extremely generous portion sizes and robust, tasty flavourings, yay! My companion went for scampi and chips which was also a big hit. The bill was a happy affair — I think the whole lot came to about £20 including drinks. Will definitely be back. Next time the seafood platter better watch out!

I’m probably being quite mean with my score because the fish and the value for money was excellent. It’s got all the charm of a seaside restaurant, with no pomp or ceremony, exactly as it should be. My main of a fish platter was well cooked and very decently portioned. I just found it all a bit bland and old fashioned. The chef has probably been there for years and has been doing the same dishes since he started, but grilled fish can be a bit more exciting. Call me a snob but perhaps a dab of garlic butter or a garnish might have improved the dish. It came with boiled potatoes, which were boiled perfectly, they were just bland. Even though I would probably go again, it doesn’t deserve a 4. It needs to update itself a bit first.

Not that many vegetarian items on the menu besides a few fruit or veg starters, salads(green and greek) and sides(mushy peas, fries, onion rings) and maybe a pasta dish. Good value and service. Note: If you like seafood(like my other dinner companions) then this restaurant might deserve a 3 or 4.

This restaurant was probably one of the best meals I have ever had in England so far. My friends and I made a day trip to Brighton and had to end our trip with a bang. My friends who studied abroad in Sussex also suggest me to come here for dinner. We ordered the seafood risotto and prawns. The portions were huge and filled us enough for the night to not have room for desserts. I suggest visitors to come here if they want a GOOD meal to satisfy their seafood cravings. If you’re sick of sandwiches, fish n chips, overpriced meals… COMEHERE!

The Regency Restaurant boasts a great spot for admiring the blues of the Channel outside, a wonderful spacious interior, disappointing fish ‘n chips and even worse onion rings. It’s the food that drags down the experience here. As Grant T says, the best fish and chips tend to be found on the coast(and logically too, as the fish doesn’t get any fresher). When perfectly cooked, the fresh fish should fall apart in your mouth. And the batter should be flexible yet crunchy. Not here though: my fish had loads of bones, didn’t taste great and the batter was greasy. The mushy peas were in a small portion and merely okay. The onion rings were awful. Super-greasy, with rather odd taste to them. Definitely the worst I’ve ever had. Worth visiting for the views and a drink maybe. But steer clear of the fish ‘n chips and onion rings.

This was the last stop on our Unilocal field trip to Brighton, and unfortunately(for me) it was extremely disappointing. When you go to the coast, you want some good fish and chips. We headed here for them. The restaurant itself is very cool. The high ceiling and chandelier were two highlights of the décor. It’s very retro(as in, old), but it was still charming. Unfortunately, that’s about as far as the charm went. The food, well, it was pretty abysmal(for me, others seem to enjoy theirs). I had cod and chips. The cod was full of bones. One mouthful I had to pick at least four out of my mouth. That’s not something you want when you have fish and chips. It wasn’t just mine either, a couple of the other pieces of fish at the table had a few bones as well.(Although I think mine had the most, about eight by the time I stopped eating the fish.) The batter was soggy. It wasn’t greasy, but it wasn’t light and crisp either. If the batter was light and crisp and delicious, I’d be willing to overlook some bones. The chips were good, but nothing special. I hate to say it but the chippy near my place does a better job(and it’s in Enfield). The side order of mushy peas was incredibly tiny. It did have amazingly cheap prices though. So that’s something it had going for it. I probably wouldn’t go back if I were in Brighton though. If this really is the best fish and chips in Brighton, then Brighton really needs to up their game. The fish and chips in Cornwall is exponentially better.

If your looking for a bite to eat on Brighton’s Victorian seafront, that has a bit of history and class the regency restaurant is the place. Its a breath of fresh air in a sea of tacky shops and fried food outlets. Its a really traditional old style Brit restaurant with ‘catch of day’ boards and décor in keeping with its historic roots. The Regency has been serving food since the 1930s and has a place in the hearts of all Brighton fish lovers. the restaurant has on street seating which gives it a give of a continental feel, its a fab venue to soak up some rays. Its a great place to take visitors from abroad to give them a real taste of Britain.
