We visited this restaurant twice in December. On the first visit we were impressed, on the second visit we were very disappointed after paying £82.50 for what turned out to be one of the worst Steaks either of us have ever had. That’s £82.50 for only the steak not the meal.

I would rate this 3.5 stars if I could as that feels a more fair rating. Today was the 2nd time I have been to the coalshed and last time I went I thought it was amazing. Sadly today my steak roast was not a patch on the last time. Maybe it was a different chef or they had used a different supplier for the meat but the flavour just wasn’t there. The steak was burnt on the outside and totally raw inside(had ordered medium rare). The service is great and atmosphere nice enough. It’s a bit pricy for drinks but the wines are all good quality. Would probably go back but wouldn’t rush back… The homemade salted fudge for £1.50 was my favourite part of the meal

Good food, but not worth the price. 130GBP for 2 people for some steak, potatoes and pasta just wasn’t cutting it. We got prime rib and a bunch of sides, but it just didn’t justify the price. The salad was just lettuce and a few shaved pieces of Parmesan. The potato dishes were salt bombs. If I’m gonna go to a restaurant for Mac and cheese, it shouldn’t look like it came from a Kraft box. Don’t get me wrong. The food was delicious. The ambiance was great. The service was good as well. It just felt like the price point didn’t match the hype and the food. I’d certainly spend that much at a steakhouse, but it should be better than that.

I’ve been meaning to try this place for absolutely ages and I happily got the chance last night. A fellow Unilocaler(Brett M) and I headed to the Coal Shed last night to feast on meat — the reason to go here– and I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal! The venue itself is lovely– small and cosy but with a very stylish feel about it. The staff are dresses smartly and are quick and professional. We were greeted by a lovely girl who showed us to our table upstairs. The walls have some great art on them and the ambience is wonderful. Upstairs felt secluded but not quiet– perfect for a mid week meal out. The food… Oh let me tell you about the food! :D I was starving when I arrived and the reputation of the steaks here was lingering in my mind all day long so I opted for a steak, medium rare, as well as a side of chips and a glass of the house red wine. I also ordered the peppercorn sauce for the meat, which cost a little extra. I enjoyed every bite!!! The meat was cooked perfectly and tasted incredible. The sauce was so incredible(though missing the chunky peppercorns that this sauce usually features) and the chips were thick but crispy and wonderful! It was a fantastic meal and I literally left nothing on my plate. My share of the meal came to £30, too, which(though not a luxury I could afford every night of the week) seemed really reasonable to me, for all that I had. My only little grumble would be that you would usually expect a steak to come with chips and sauce and not have to pay extra for these, but ultimately it was only a few pounds extra and the food was so tasty I didn’t really care! Wonderful menu, lovely staff and a fantastic atmosphere! I can’t wait to return and eat here again. It was a really mid-week treat!

A great little place tucked away off the main party street of Brighton. If you like your meat or seafood then this is a place for you. Specialising in steak, they offer loads. Sirloin the cheapest cut to porterhouse the top end of the scale. It’s all cooked in a special BBQ oven, so the taste is brilliant. I went for the surf n turf. Sirloin steak with half a lobster. Only criticism I have is that you have to pay extra for the sides. At the price you pay for the meat, throwing in a side would be nice. Having said that the beef dripping chips as a side are some of the best chips I’ve ever had. Steak cooked to my liking and the lobster brilliant. There’s a wide selection of drinks available from beer to wine to cocktails. Sunday Roasts are great here too. Friendly service, offer lots of help when choosing what to eat. Lots if specials available too

Excellent services and food. The meat is prime quality as is the choice of wines. Good seating arrangements where you don’t feel crowded in.

Great place! Lovely food, especially meat and fish! Would definitely recommend this place. Pleasant people introducing them selves with their name. Price for burger 11 pounds, veggie risotto 13 pounds, do reasonable.

Nice room, nice atmosphere with friendly staff. Basically fish or steak, all cooked on the grill. Starters were tasty. Linguine with John Dory was excellent, a great choice as a main. The rib eye steak was unfortunately well over cooked. Ordered medium rare it was delivered medium well. When steak is one of your menu cornerstones to get it so wrong would be a bit of a worry. To be fair the restaurant was good about it and took the cost off the bill, which was a nice touch. However it was a disappointment. Shame as the rest of the evening was good but to be a really good restaurant this type of mistake needs to be eradicated.

recommended this place by a couple of Brighton locals, with the caveat — «its only for carnivores!» and i would say they were correct! there seemed to be a couple of decent fish dished floating around but they had no chance of catching my eye. service was pleasant. as was the décor, very clean tables but the venue could have done with a little more imagination. the burger was excellent, slightly overcooked, but forgiven as the meat still tasted great. the steak was tender and tasty. chips were alrite. this should’ve given them 2 stars — the wine, bordeaux by the glass, was clearly off. but was replaced when i asked them. worth a look, probably other places to check out rather than go back.

Hearing about The Coal Shed being a traditional BBQ restaurant, I was really intrigued and excited to try it out. It was a new concept for Brighton, and when my friend suggested it as a birthday dinner location I jumped at the chance to experience it. The restaurant itself is very well presented. We were led upstairs to join our friends, music was playing on a MP3 player and the atmosphere was nice. We passed the kitchen on the way upstairs which gave us the opportunity to peer in and check out the tradition BBQ oven — our hopes were high! We ordered pre-dinner cocktails which were pretty run of the mill. The menu looked interesting and when I spotted bone marrow on the menu I couldn’t resist — it’s one of my favourite dishes but its not something that appears on menus very often. My boyfriend is a huge fan of octopus, and the dish was served with chorizo making it even more appealing. When the dishes arrived they were presented nicely but the first thing we noted was the size — both of them were ridiculously small! I don’t mind small dishes if the flavours are gastronomical but both of these dishes were disappointing and gone in a couple of mouthfuls. For main course we had decided to share a rib eye steak as recommended by our waiter. The steaks were priced by weight but it was not made clear to us exactly what to expect or how much it would be. The steak was served on its own so we ordered side of beef dripping chips and a tomato and basil salad. There was about six chips in the portion and the salad was infuriating — a couple of flavourless tomatoes with approximately one basil leaf shredded on top. The steak itself arrived and was a lot smaller than we had expected — I could have eaten it all to myself! — if, that it, it had been particularly tasty — which it wasn’t. The quality of the meat seemed poor and it lacked in any real favour. My boyfriend cooks much better steaks at home. The birthday girl also had to return her meal as it wasn’t cooked properly and the vegetarian in the group was very disappointed with the lack of choice. Overall, we were pretty disappointed with the meal — and then we got the bill! We were astounded to see that we had been charged £57 for the steak alone! Our share came to £100 in total — a complete rip off for what we had. This restaurant has so much potential, and the staff were friendly, but paying this kind of money for food of sub-standard quality is not acceptable and we won’t be going back.

Oh. My. God. This place is amazing. We tried the tuna carpaccio and pork starters and I finished off with a bacon steak while my compatriots enjoyed pollock cooked to perfection on a bed of chorizo, clams, leeks and mussels. They have these amazing beef dripping chips which I highly recommend. Seriously, this place rocks and the next time I’m in Brighton, I’m making a beeline for that place.

Six of us went for my daughter’s 20th birthday on a Sunday lunchtime. The restaurant is situated in an unsightly part of Brighton not far from the Lanes. The restaurant itself is functional, and was very quiet during our visit. The staff were welcoming, friendly and attentive throughout the meal. The menu is slightly confusing, in that you order the more expensive steaks/joints by their weight, and they are priced that way, £6 or so per 100g. We had a selection of starters including the bone marrow, which was delicious, scallops with pancetta and razor clams. The main course dishes were all very good, included half a lobster, calves liver, burgers with a variety of toppings and a rump steak with bone marrow jus. The side dishes at £2 each(including triple cooked chips) were excellent, just the right amount. We enjoyed our visit and will definitely go back, but at £35 per head(including wine and beer) it will have to be a fairly special occasion.

Outstanding!!! I have had to review my diet, due to medical reasons, but after having my son take us here. I weakened. My wife and I eat out most of the time and we found the food, service and ambience to be brilliant here. All that has been written by previous Qypers can be wholeheartedly upheld. Such high standards could be emulated by other restaurants. Thank you for a great evening.

You people got to check this place out! I revisited in 3 weeks that pretty much summaries how much I love the food. I have tried the bone marrow for starter and their proud burgers, however the steak platter to share for two seems sold out very quick so I am aiming to taste it on my next visit. Just one thing though, serving time does take a bit longer than usual So please be patient.

Brighton rocks, but the Coal Shed is the real deal. Finest quality locally sourced meat seared on their unique coal-fired grill. These guys are not messing around. Had a recent professional lunch here and my clients were duly blown away by the standard of food, setting and on point staff. Thank you Coal Shed.

I live in London, but was down in Brighton for the weekend. A friend suggested we go to a new restaurant that had just opened. We arrived at the Coal Shed and realised it was actually their first night. We were given a lovely table(there were 6 of us) at the front. The owner was very friendly, suggesting wine and also advising us about their different meats(it seems they take their meat pretty seriously!). We also started with 8 different starters between 6. All were delicious, I especially loved the 9 Spiced Lamb Chops. For main course I had the Rib Eye with Harissa butter it was delicious, so tender and full of flavour. We also had the tomato salad, baked beans and chips all were fantastic. I was very impressed, especially for such a new restaurant. I’m pretty spoiled when it comes to restaurants, but we will definitely be making the trip down to Brighton again soon. We want to try the Poussin, the burger and the Porterhouse. Good luck The Coal Shed!
