Surprised this place hasn’t been reviewed more recently. Has just changed hands after a couple of years in the doldrums but is now really good again — the crepes have gone but been replaced by Real Patisserie breads and some great sandwich ideas as well as baked potatoes etc. Good quality ingredients, friendly staff, good prices(especially compared to some places in the North Laine) and decent coffee too! Chatted to the chap who’s bought the business and he’s planning more changes in the new year, including more seating! Also has a very good loyalty scheme for both coffees and sandwiches and is also doing lunch platters for offices — I’m really pleased to see a local business thriving again.

Thirded on the great staff. These are the kind of sandwiches you would make at home, and I mean that in a positive way. You know how sometimes you want a couple of avocado slices in your sandwich, but can’t be bothered to use up the rest of the avocado? This is your solution. Come here for no-frills, tasty sandwiches made with love and kiss annoying bits of leftover vegetables goodbye.

This great little sunshine yellow sandwich shop and creperie is tucked on a corner just a bit up from the main drag of the North Laine. They have a load of different fillings which you can have in a wrap, a sandwich or a crêpe, and they also do smoothies(fairly reasonable at around £2.60) and fresh juices. The two members of staff were very friendly and patient with my umming and ahhing over which fillings to have. In the end I had a savoury crêpe, which at £3.25 was again quite reasonable, although it wasn’t loaded with filling. My one comment about the crêpe would be that it was a little undercooked and tasted a wee bit floury. As it happens, I quite like that in a crêpe, so I was happy, but if you are a crêpe snob it might not have been to your tastes. I suspect that that is simply because they weren’t busy and hadn’t had the hot plates on very high or something. Anyway, my experience was generally positive, and I’ll definitely think of the Galley next time I want to pick up a quick snack in the Laines.

The Galley is a really lovely little eatery in the North Laine area, one of those places that is doing almost everything right. The fact that it’s also a hop, skip and a jump away from my part-time office, and my love is this place is complete. It could do with more places to sit, but I can live without seating: it would just be the cherry on top. Definitely give it a go! The Galley is a basic sandwich shop, with a couple of really clever and tasty twists! First of all, the choice for what to put on your sandwich is huge for a place this small, and the pricing system is inexpensive, unless you want a fully packed sandwich, in which case it is a bit pricey, but hey, if you want to be a fatty with 4 or more fillings, be my guest… And then there’s the crepes, handmade in front of you… Yummy! And completely unexpected: why does a sandwich shop specialise in crepes? Why does it matter is probably the more pertinent question: they taste amazing, a perfect lunchtime snack. This is a great little place for a lunchtime excursion, and the only thing it’s missing is somewhere to sit beyond the corrugated iron out the front. Still, that’s a minor sticking point: the basic gist of jummy sandwiches and crepes is good. Don’t get that Costa sandwich, pop in here instead!

Look no further for the perfect wrap. The devastating closure of Pulp Kitchen a couple of years ago left a gaping sandwich-shaped hole in the lunchtime dining scene in central Brighton. Luckily my flatmate recently introduced me to The Galley and I’ve never looked back. I LOVE this place. The range of bread and fillings is incredible and the pricing plan logical: The more fillings, the more you pay– a sandwich with ¾ fillings will cost around £3.50. I always, without fail, go for the warm falafel and goats cheese wrap, loaded up with salad, pine nuts, olives and sweet chilli sauce– it’s heavenly. The salad items and sauces come at no extra cost so don’t hold back! There’s always specials on the board, but you can get creative and combine any number of ingredients, including garlic mushrooms, spinach, and bacon, to name but a few. They also do sweet and savoury crepes, and they’re not over-priced. On top of the endless culinary delights one can experience at the Galley, the woman who runs the place is absolutely lovely, and I feel genuinely happy to be supporting her business. The customer feedback cards hanging in the window speak volumes. They even have a customer loyalty scheme, so your tenth sandwich will be free!
