My friend and I decided to go to this pub to meet up with a friend of his. It’s at a good location, near the Royal Pavilion and pretty close to the centre of the city. I definitely agree with Vanessa A.‘s review, regarding the fact that the majority of patrons are girls. My friend and I were the only two guys at this place. We hung out with five girls that night(all friends of my friend’s friend), and had a pretty good time chatting, and drinking pints of Guinness stout beer and Strongbow cider. Although there was not that much people since we came on a Sunday night, I enjoyed the atmosphere and the camaraderie. This place has a fairly decent pool table. I played a couple of games with the girls my friend knew and also had a good time shooting around the balls. When I think of this place, I think red for some reason, mainly because the red walls. The benches I sat on were not too comfortable, though, the cushions were kind of firm. Despite that, I still had a good time hanging out with my friend and the girls. Overall, this is another decent pub that I had a pretty good time drinking and hanging out with friends and another one of the pubs that made my trip to Brighton memorable.

The Marlborough is a fringe theatre pub that is often putting on interesting events. It has gone through a few owners since I moved to Brighton but currently has a stable core of fans and a good management. If you like your venues with creative potential and not overly polished, this is a good hang out. The list of events is eclectic so you are bound to find the occasional event to wet your whistle.

The Marlborough is an excellent pub, with a buzzing fringe theatre upstairs. If there’s something good on, it’s the perfect place to spend an evening, watching funky little fringe pieces and having a pleasant drink. Well worth a visit! First thing you need to do is check out the Marlborough’s website, pick a show and book yourself a ticket. You’ll find a pleasant mixture of comedy, short plays, music, story-telling… all sorts of different nights. The wealth of choice is staggering, similar to the nearby Three and Ten: there will be something for everyone. Once you’ve found your show, pop along to the Marlborough on the night, and enjoy the great selection of beers, ales, spirits and wine. The ambiance and atmosphere is lively and friendly, and there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy a beverage, as well as enjoy a round of pool. Once you do get upstairs, the little theatre is very nicely set-out, and seats about 60. It’s nice to see such a nice theatre when you get upstairs: most theatres above pubs are normally a black box with some lights, or just a room with a stage, but this is a proper theatre stage, curtains, a proscenium arch, everything: it helps every piece I’ve seen in the space. In short, The Marlborough is a perfect place to see fringe theatre, and have a quick pint! Go give this little pub and some fringe theatre/comedy soon, the Brighton Fringe Festival’s coming in May!
