Utopia Cafe

Looking for a snack to take back to my hotel room & Utopia Café had this glorious abundance of cakes in their display… score!
Unfortunately, the chocolate cake I chose was dry, dry, dry, even after they poured cream all over my cake. Also, I never thought I’d be saying these words but the icing was too sugary…& for me that is saying something
I really liked the atmosphere of the place & the staff was nice as could be… just wish the cake had been tasty
Def willing to try them again & re-​review!

This café is located in the North Laines and is a good place to stop for a mid shop break! It has a range of teas and coffees as well as freshly made smoothies. They also have an assortment of freshly baked cakes, and the ones I have tasted were good! I can recommend the marble cheesecake and the ‘lumpy’ cake which is a mousse and cake dessert. YUM!
In terms of price the slices of cake are a little pricey (£3.25) but the teas and coffees are pretty reasonable. The staff have always been friendly and polite, and were willing to work with my mother who does not like drinking tea from mugs so used the coffee cups. I also really like the style of the restaurant, its a mix of bright orange and white and looks very sleek and modern. Being mid-​way through the Laines it is also a marvellous place to watch the world go by.

It’s been awhile since I had a meal consisting of a cake and a smoothie. My boss at my weekend job constantly says to me: «Oh, you must try their cakes. They’re so good!» She then started licking her lips, which was an image I didn’t want to see.
The place was packed when I entered, so it became obvious to me that this was going to be an «order and run» type of visit. Regardless, it was enjoyable. There are a wide range of smoothies and cakes to choose from, and the clerk told me that any combination of cake and smoothie is sure to be a sheer delight. Yes, it’s a sales pitch, but a very convincing one. It also helps that the cakes and smoothies are delicious.

Utopia is a classic of the Brighton North Laine café scene, specialising in cake and smoothies. For a healthy (well, sort of) lunch-​time stop off, Utopia is a great place for a sitdown, with a lovely, open, friendly ambiance, good service… the only problem is finding a place to sit down! That and the fact that beyond smoothies and cakes, everything else is a little bland.
In terms of the other cafes in the area, Utopia does come up a little short, with little worth having beyond the excellent smoothies and the lovely cake. And the cake is heavenly… succulent, sweet, cheap: a deliciously naughty treat! Combine it with a smoothie to feel slightly better about it, as they too are delightful. I recommend trying something you haven’t had before: there are some really excellent surprises! I won’t spoil them here, but get out of your comfort zone.
So, another café in the North Laines… Most of them are pretty similar. However, this one is a special case, and is worth skipping some of the others for.

Mwahahaha! I want cake! That was pretty much what I said as I charged into Utopia, just as the three gentlemen were looking forward to ending their shift… I feel guilty in retrospect, but I really really wanted some cake…
Carrot cake was my sweet satisfier of choice, and it was given to me in a nice little plastic box (which I’ve kept) and a stylish wooden fork/​napkin combo. I was a little disappointed I didn’t get to eat it in, as the store did look rather handsome, but I was just grateful for being served at all considering the late hour of my calling.
So then I started the walk home, and was disappointed to find that the cake was simply too delicious and gorgeously made for me not to simply devour it on the spot, meaning that much of the walk home was without cake… something I had not planned for. Reading Sophie’s review, it sound like they sell stuff other than cake here, which I will try next time I buy some cake at Utopia…

In need of a smoothie? There’s no better place. Whilst countless Brighton smoothie and juice bars have come and gone in the past couple of years, Utopia has stood the test of time.
You can’t miss it… Utopia is a bright orange café located in the heart of the Laines, on Gardner St. The selection of smoothies is almost infinite– there’s over 50 fruit combinations to choose from. ‘Berries and Yogurt’ and ‘Mango pine and passion’ are among the best ones I’ve tried. As well as smoothies, you can get various frappes and fruit shakes. If the weather is chilly, they also have their own house blend of coffee and an array of delicious homemade cakes. I can recommend the carrot… moist and just the right amount of icing. If you’re looking for a more substantial bite, they do sandwiches and wraps.
If the sun is shining there is seating out the front and in the garden. One star lost because I think the décor is a little too orange and plastic, but other than that, this place is a goodun!
