Is it just my non-cultered(ness) or my sheer blindness, or even just plain ignorance… but… corrrect me if I am wrong, is there not much difference between this ocean chinese fish bar, and any other chinese takeaway, I would at least expect that the fish menu would be considerabley more diverse and contain some components that I have never seen before. Despite that, the menu is pretty good, discount the ‘fish’ bit from the title and treat it like any other chinese and you wont be dissapointed. Not to eye catching from the outside, and during the day you could be forgiven for thinking you would never give it a go, but when they are in full flow the friendly smiles and sharp service will leave you wanting to come back next time you have a prwan cracker craving or a sweet and sour yearning!

In line with other takeaway establishments in the area, Ocean Chinese Fish Bar is not the most glamorous of venues. Everything about the place screams basic, from its pebble-dash exterior and bland yellow sign to its minimalistic interior and brown tiled counter. But we all know about the perils of judging books by their covers… Because this little takeaway is actually pretty good on the food front, which after all is its main purpose. I’ve had fish and chips from this place a couple of times, and each time I’ve consumed them with glee and gratitude. The Chinese couple who run the joint are also very friendly, and most appreciative of any custom they receive. Appearances, then, are clearly deceptive…

This is pretty much your classic no frills Chinese chip shop. Despite being pretty close to my house I rarely use it and, for some reason I’m not sure of, is somewhere I’ve always been a bit dismissive about. It’s probably the overall feel of the place; it’s basically a counter with a board on the wall in a slightly rundown looking shop. Also, it’s opposite the Oxford pub which isn’t a great mental association. However, a takeaway loving mate has recently moved into our place temporarily so I’ve eaten a couple times here of late and it’s not at all bad. The fish and chips are tasty and not at all greasy, while the chow mein, though simple, is fresh and comes in a generous portion. It’s also pretty cheap, with the former about £3 and the latter about a fiver. One note: they’re not open for lunch, just in the evenings though they are still going when the pubs kick out.
