I’m actually rather fond of the legendary Rita’s on Stokes Croft. Of all the chippies, fish n chips and chicken stops in this part of town a real effort has been made at Rita’s. In the traditional manner the shop is split in two by a long hot shelf with various treats sitting behind the glass, lagged in batter and grease, but enticing nonetheless. You see, one is rarely put off by such displays for one has walked into the shop in the first place. Once inside it’s a wide choice of kebabs, burgers and pies. Long time runners such as fish and chips, the Donner kebab and cheesy chips are always in high demand with the mix of local and student clientele. A good selection of cold drinks and salad, plus the guys behind the counter are always laughing and smiling — this is definitely one of the better places for late night food in Stokes Croft.

If you’re in Stokes Croft in the early hours of the morning, having just attended one of the numerous clubs in the area and fancy something quick, easy and greasy to settle your stomach, then Rita’s is the place to go. There’s nothing particularly special about it, serving the usual kebabs, burgers and chip shop fare, but the food has never made me sick — and that’s why I recommend it. Also, the staff are extremely friendly and good for a bit of banter if you’re so inclined. Also if you’re around the area at a more decent hour, then it’s actually a pretty good fish bar. The fish can be a tad on the greasy side, but the chips are fine and they do an excellent curry sauce to help things go down.

Great takeaway in the slightly run down, but gradually improving area that is Stokes Croft. The chips are always a favourite of mine after pub chucking out times, and none of the prices are too steep. I’m yet to meet Rita, but I look forward to the day I do; I will be congratulating her on her really successful takeaway, which is popular with locals and visitors alike.
