Despite its abrasive lime green paint job, I do love Sandwich Box. I used to work on Victoria Street, and recall many a morning whereby I couldn’t have continued to function without the simple sustenance of the shop’s coffee and toast for two pounds deal. Not the cheapest of offers, to be sure, but the coffee was always rich and smooth, and the toast slightly underdone(just as I like it) and slathered in wholesome raspberry jam. Furthermore, staff here tend to be friendly, morning people(the type that can rise above customers’ Monday morning blues), and are happy to make up sandwiches to suit individual requests. Haute cuisine it ain’t, but Sandwich Box will fill the gap and fill it well.

Much like most places just on the outskirts of the city centre’s hub, the sandwich box suffers from a bad location spot. However, when I discovered it I was on my way home(Temple Meads area) and wanted something warm to eat, I new if waited too long i’d be paying high prices for the near to station café’s so I popped into the Sandwich box, granted the price was not especially cheap, and I was very hungry, but the warm ham and cheese toasty which greeted my lips felt like heaven on earth, and for another thing I had escaped the horrible rain and noisy cars that where just on the other side of the glass… bonus! Great for a little stop off, I would recommend getting something to take away, as if you eat/drank in the charms of a roof over your head a temporary warmth will soon wear thin.

I’m afraid to say the the Sandwich Box isn’t really anything special. Being a self confessed coffee-aholic I can safely say that I have a very good sense of what is good coffee and what is average coffee. Unfortunately the Sandwich Box is just average. Their snacks/pastrys are also pretty average. My brownie was a little stale and my coffee was a little weak. Best bet is to hop two steps to your right to Barista’s where you will get a much better atmosphere and much better coffee.

You’ve got to feel sorry for the Sandwich Box. Situated next to arguably the best café in Bristol, Baristas, can’t be easy for them. Out of interest I decided to tear myself away from my much loved coffee joint and venture next door. Who knows, I might find a hidden gem?! …maybe not. Instantly I wished I hadn’t made the effort to check it out. I was served quickly and my cup of tea set me back less than £2 but it lacked any inviting atmosphere. Service with a smile is completely the opposite of what I got and the smell of cooking oil completely put me off. The bacon butty one gentleman was tucking into looked particularly good, but I kept thinking ‘I bet it would be better in Baristas’.
