Bamboo Garden, in the exclusive Pontcanna area, serves very passable Chinese take-away food, that is only very slightly more expensive than its less salubriously positioned rivals. Despite the prime location, there has been very little effort expended in attempting to make the premises conform to the elaborate, highbrow design principles of its neighbours. The shop front is no different in principle to any other Chinese take-away. It sports an in-your-face sign with big bad and bold lettering, with a bright orange back-drop, to ensure that the least well sighted amongst us can’t even miss it! Result! I’m willing to forgive them everything on the basis that they do my favourite starters(prawn toast and seaweed — which they normally do with dried fish, but I prefer it without, and so they willingly omit it for my benefit, if I remember to ask). They also do a number of curried and satay dishes as well as all the usual suspects besides.

This is the kind of place that makes you arteries clench up with just the thought of it. While the outside façade of the place is hardly very appealing, the food is up to a good standard. Perhaps order by phone to avoid the shop if you’re all that picky. They serve a good range of Chinese takeaway food, although nothing too far removed from what you might expect from this kind of place. Lemon chicken and sweet and sour pork are some of the sugary classics you’ll find on the menu here. While their food is by no means a culinary sensation, you will certainly find yourself more than satisfied with their portions and taste. The price is also a great reason to go to this place. And I seem to recall you get free prawn crackers. You’d be crackers not to give them a go… …sorry.
