Unless you pressed your nose up against the window, from the outside you have absolutely no idea that this was a Chinese restaurant. A little Tea Rooms would seem far more appropriate for this quaint, little pebbled building. Like Laura, I wasn’t blown away by the food. I had sweet and sour tofu, which though nice I’ve had better elsewhere. My sister however declared the duck chow mein to be the best she’s ever had, so perhaps it all depends on what you’ve ordered. The staff were all pleasant, however halfway through the meal moved our wine stand at least five foot away from the table. I’m not exactly sure what that was about. Maybe they thought we’d had too much to drink, or perhaps wished to pour the drinks for us? Whatever the case it was decidedly odd(though they did move it straight back to our side, when we asked).

This Chinese food is good but it’s not great. My egg-fried rice had that strange texture about it that seems like it’s been cooked and then reheated. I’m not suggesting that this is what happened. It just wasn’t that nice. The main dishes I had of vegetables was good, but lacking a little bit of flavour. The service, though, was really good and I enjoyed my time there — though more because of the service and company than the food.

Smaller helpings but better quality ingredients and honest chinese cooking styles make Summer Palace, in my view, the best of the Cardiff chinese restaurants to visit. Situated in Llandaff by the cathedral with ample parking nearby, its a smaller venue and on a busy night it can seem almost shoulder to shoulder without your neighbours being in your seat. The duck & pancakes is a particular favourite and try the schezuan spare ribs and smoked chicken starters, and the ‘sizzling’ main courses are the best of the menu to go for. A nice cold Tsing-Tao chinese beer is the perfect accompaniment rather than wine, and finish it off with thetoffeecoated apple or bananna balls with vanilla ice-cream. Service is friendly and theres no hurry to rush you out. Always book and try and avoid being placed upstairs which has no atmosphere at all. Enjoy.

A no-surprise Chinese/Cantonese restaurant in the heart of Llandaff village. The Summer Palace was opened by Mr. Chim in 1988. He has over 40 years of cooking experience and has derived his own style of cooking by modifying ancient recipes. Its longevity is testimony to its popularity. Standard roll-call of Chinese favourites, sensibly priced and served in generous portions. Backed up by a decent wine list and a good selection of beers and lagers, all at affordable prices. The staff are pleasant, welcoming and scrutable. It was awarded the South Wales Echo Food & Drink Award 2005 — Chinese Restaurant of the Year.
