Having lived in a pub before it’s so nice to visit what I would call a proper pub because I see less and less of them these days. Great food — short menu, which for me is a real POSITIVE, I think we expect so much variety in our lives these days from supermarket shelves to extensive restaurant menus but sometimes I think it’s good to go back to basics… do we really need so much choice? For me, less truly is more, everything served here is of the highest quality and all home cooked. There is an excellent choice of real ales, a cosy roaring fire, live music and friendly staff. The atmosphere is cracking and even when it is packed the staff always give wonderfully attentive service.

My favorite place in Derby. Doesn’t look much from the outside but brilliantly ‘traditional’ and cosy inside. Beers and wine are good. Food menu always impresses me. Most importantly everyone working there is always really friendly and genuinely helpful, which counts for a lot when it can get pretty busy.

This is another of those very nice pubs, with lots of different rooms and areas to relax in. Early in the week the beer choice seemed to have been weakened by the weekend’s festivities. There were still a couple of beers to be had, including a tasty concoction from their own Brewery called Drake’s Dark.(The Derby brewery Dancing Duck owns a couple of pubs in the city, this is one of them).

Good little pub located in the backstreets of Derby — came across it by chance after going to the Brewery Tap. Had lots of bar snacks on the bar when we got there, appatently its part of the Derby ghost walk, and the barmaid was keen for us to eat it so it didn’t get binned. Good range of beers on tap, all reasonably priced. Has a real olde worlde feel to it, which is spoiled a bit by all the hand written signs. Worth a visit.

Although I don’t drink in this pub regularly, it is a real gem of place to have a pint or two. Tucked away from the main hustle and bustle of the tow centre, the Exeter Arms offers a good selection of real ale and standard beers. There is a nice comfortable atmosphere, despite the small/cosy size. This is probably one of the lst real pubs left in the city centre area, since most are now being forced to close and are being replaced by more upmarket bars from well know chains. Worth a visit perhaps as part of a real ale pub crawl around the city, visiting other real ale pubs such as the Royal Standard, Ye Olde Dolphin and the Brunswick.
