Food was fantastic but the staff are absolutely dreadful. I would certainly NOT recommend this place unless you like being treated like a second class citizen. Don’t waste your money.

Had dinner here tonight with a couple of colleagues from work. YUMYUM. Excellent food and attentive but not cloying service. I had the fish soup special and then the scallops which were wonderful. Both of my companions had the sea bass special which they devoured completely and then we sinfully followed with the chocolate mess(which we shared) — tasty frozen chocolate slice imbedded with meringue pieces to add some crunch and nestled against a beautiful custard sauce. This place is hands down better than most restaurants in the area. Too bad I won’t be back again until February.

Featured in Egon Ronay’s 2006 Guide to the Best Restaurants and Gastro Pubs, the Good Pub Guide 2007, and the 2007 Michelin Pub Guide, the Sweet Olive in Aston Tirrold has become an increasingly popular gastropub. The blackboard menu evolves daily, as do the specials, with an emphasis on seasonal dishes and locally sourced produce. A definite favourite for our Abingdon office!

Excellent restaurant and gastropub just outside Didcot run by French chefs. Booking by phone ONLY. Opening hours: 12 – 2&7−9pm daily, EXCEPT closed Wed & Sun evenings. Closed February; closed for one week in July. Wheelchair friendly. Highly recommended.

i mostly have been here for occassional pint of beer as i get the impression that although run mainly by french people(owners wife is english) they take their beer as serious as the french tradition of food and wine. I HAVE heard a few comments that they can seem a bit aloof which is the first impression you may get but to be honest i get feeling that they are more of a reserved nature than rude as once your face becomes more familiar to them they come out of their shell so to speak, have eaten here a few times and oddly enough although its predominately french influenced food i had the best lasagne i ever tasted here

Lovely traditional pub serving really great food. However, the staff are not very friendly which can affect the enjoyment of your evening. Having said that on the one occasion we did have a complaint about the food it was dealt with quickly with little fuss and an excellant replacement meal provided.

The Chequers Inn is a good quality traditional local pub serving a good range of ales. The owners are French, and the restaurant menu has a strong French influence with touches of the mediteranean and British dishes. Food is very well prepared and there is a good wine list. I had fresh sardines for starters and the best Venison steak I have ever had.
