With Doncaster having only really two places to cater to the alternative /rock crowd, vintage really shines in the scene. The place isn’t sparkling clean but that only adds to the homely feel of the place, with band stickers and alcohol logos everywhere. It’s not obvious to newcomers that there is also a bar downstairs, where the stage is for local acts and the toilets. Avoid the toilets if you can, as you can smell them from 10m+ away(my friend Loz was so disgusted by the smell that he got a can of air freshener from the bar, and he was stood in the crowd at the opposite side of the room!) Back upstairs, there is a dj booth and pool table. Vintage is the only place(probably) where you’ll find Pink Floyd graffiti in the womens’ toilet! A really nice place to hang out when I(rarely) have a spare night in Doncaster.

There aren’t too many places in a Doncaster that cater to the rock kids, but there is this place, which isn’t too bad. I can remember when people used to flock to the Tut and Shive, but that place sucks as a venue, and arguably as a bar, but I haven’t been in for ages. The clientele are pretty young in here. Expect college kids to people in their late twenties, and sometimes ageing rockers. There’s never no trouble in here which is refreshing for Doncaster and people are pretty friendly(if not cliquey at times). Drinks wise there’s a decent range of beer in the bar. Nothing too exotic but decent enough! I opted for a Black Sheep Riggwelter while watching the music performances downstairs. Speaking of downstairs… there is a big stage area here which is great for bands to perform on. It’s one of the few decent performance areas in the town. Pretty small and intimate, though the place does smell a bit(though does that contribute to the underground feel?). There is a bar however which is handy for people who don’t wanna miss anything. The music is mainly rock anthems which is annoying. Especially the indie as I hate indie. There are occasional bits that people don’t know much slipped in though. This place is better when local bands are performing to be honest. Finally, you can’t mention a rockbar without mentioning the toilets… and yes, the toilets as expected are a real dive. Typical rockbar toilets. They have been given a makeover recently though as they used to be plastered full of magazines. Now they’re painted up Beatles style! Even the Blue Meanie is on there! Not too bad. This place might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I can recommend it over the meat markets on Silver Street ANYDAY.

This is probably one of the only bars along with The Priory which offers something a little different other than the typical ‘chart and tart’. It plays mainly indie and alternative music and also on some days gets bands in to play. It isn’t my cup of tea really but i can see why it’s pupular. There’s a great friendly atmosphere and not stuck up like some cool retro themed places are. One of the negatives is that the location of the pub is a bit off the typical crawl a bit but thou shall be rewarded!

This is pretty much the only place in Doncaster that caters for the indie/alternative residents of the town. As a result, it gets pretty packed out, especially at weekends. The venue frequently has bands playing both in the evenings and during the day. Retro décor and a cool crowd.
