Reminds me of Mackinac Grand Hotel On Mackinac Island Michigan. The hotel is of wooden structure. It is so old, that the rooms are not even square and the floors lean somewhat. To get ice, you have to go to the restaurant. There, they fill the ice container half full. I can’t figure out the UK and how preciously they guard their ice. Pull cord lights in the bathroom, and the bathtub has a high step to get and out of it. You can see the cruise boats, but I would not recommend trying to walk there with your luggage. To get there, you would have to go out of the bay area, and then back in. Cab ride was like 5 pounds. Well worth it for the family of four. Make arrangements ahead of time though, or expect a long wait for a cab, since few seem to run on Sundays. No screens on the windows and no air conditioning. That meant we had a little visitor walk in the open window. I am not sure who was most startled – me when I saw a pigeon in our room, or the pigeon.

Hotel is in a nice location and recently renovated. Reception was clean and relaxing and staff were friendly. We got given a non sea view room and our booking site didn’t provide this as an option meaning the views were unattractive. The room did not have double glazing and cold air seemed to rush in throughout our stay through the old windows even though the radiators seemed to be on constantly. The room facilities and décor were basic(as you would expect) but had everything you would need. We found the bed comfortable and had a good nights sleep(other than being slightly cold!).

We made two visits within days, the first visit we had tea and scones and food and service were really good. The second visit was not quite so good, one of our guests had the jacket potato which our guest really enjoyed but unfortunately my husband and I both had the sausage baguette with chips and we were both disappointed.

I went here for lunch and they were obviously understaffed. It took a long time for our drinks to arrive and when they did they were wrong. Food also took a long time. Quality of the food was very good and I felt sorry for the bar staff who were having to run all over the place. A few more employees not only there but also in the kitchen and I think this place would be great.

Had a fantastic dinner here wih great service, a waterfront table at the window, good food and compared to London at a surprisingly pleasant price. Will come again!

We were there on April 13, 2012 when this hotel was called the Best Western. Short story — overpriced, shoved down our throat lunch choice. Long story — We got run over by the bus(guide). The tour that we were taking from London on this one day excursion to the English channel and Dover had been purchased from the US. The tour company was Viator. The driver and the guide made an announcement that they could call ahead and place orders with the restaurant at this hotel. It would save time. We could of course, find lunch on our own. After all a first time visitor to Dover should have no problems. Yeah right. Specially someone like us with my wheelchair. My wife ordered a vegetarian sandwich, I order fish and chips and when we got there we got a lager from the bar and settled down. The food came and I started on the fish and chips. Ugh. Oil dripped from the disgustingly salty batter. The french fries were lukewarm. I tried to eat the fish alone but it was tasteless. My wife I think ate more because she was hungry. Her food was okay. I shoved my plate away and sipped my lager. When we were ready to leave, we had to wait at the cashier so we could exit quickly and get on the bus. After paying GBP22.00 /US$ 35.00, we left. But that was not the end of it. At the steps we encountered a hailstorm. We waited as hail pounded the walkway and kerb. When the storm subsided, we made our way on to the bus. Once seated and on our way, the guide asked us all how we liked our lunch. We gave him our opinion and requested him not to put us in this no win situation again. You never know who is going to be your guide on one of your many Viator tours from London. Thankfully, this situation did not arise again.
