Having not had a hair cut or colour in… let’s say a long time I decided to try somewhere new. My previous hair dressers was beginning to feel like a rushed job and I found that off putting. I looked up places to go in Glasgow ‘top 10 hairdressers’. Found Essensuals and read a couple of reviews on here and decided this was the place for me. I was going for the chop. My hair was down to just above my tailbone. I described what I was looking for and the stylist took me to the PC showed me some different choices of the look And colour that I was after and we agreed what was best. My hair is extremely thick and it was long at the time. The stylist didn’t show any concern over it though. In my last hair dressers they would have 2 girls drying my hair but it wasn’t an issue here, the stylist done every part of my hair herself and took her time over it. Made sure I was happy with it. I wasn’t made to feel like a hinderance for having such troublesome hair. The end result was great! 5 out of 5 from me. I’ll be going back!

First ever visit on Saturday. Had my hair put up in a brilliant funky on trend up do,(not an easy job when your hair is really long and straight) by Karen. Everyone really friendly. From the second I walked through the door until I left I was well and truly pampered. I shall be coming back to see the«wonderful Karen» again, to work her magic.

My hair life is fraught with misery and despair. I’ve paid £13 for a crappy haircut in London. I’ve paid £50 for a crappy haircut in London. My recent £38 crappy haircut in London(a self-esteem crippling pixie/shag/mullet hybrid) has been growing out for a couple months now, and I figured that while I was in Glasgow I might as well splash out on a crappy haircut, as it certainly would be less costly than its counterparts in England’s capital have been. And I stepped into Essensuals. Sure, there are Essensuals in London, but I was feeling good about this little salon on St Vincent, around the corner from Glasgow Central Station — I mean, how could I go wrong by picking the closest salon to the station where my Glasgow-bound train from London dropped me off. .. ? I admit, this was a hasty choice, and I was fully prepared for the worst. But what I got was the best. I sat down, and my stylist and I pulled the pins that were previously hiding my haircut shame out of my hair, and she started running her hands through my hair(I swear with a baffled look on her face, unless I was imagining it). «What would you like done today?» «I got this awful haircut a while back, and I hate it.» «What do you hate about it?» «Mostly the fact that it looks like a mullet.» And so after some more discussion, we came to the conclusion that we’d bob it. I was fine with this, although still not expecting much. But the stylist took her time as she snipped through my hair, many times over. She commented on the sheer thickness of my hair, yet she never took out a pair of thinning sheers(this is my litmus test of good stylists). The end result was fabulous. She asked if I wanted anything changed at the end, and I made a non-committal statement about my fringe looking a bit too perfect; she chopped into it to make it a bit more funky and undone. Ultimately, I’m no longer embarrassed of my hair, and, for a Londoner at least, £40 for the amount of time I got in the cutting chair was a bargain. Unfortunately since I can’t afford the £120 train tickets every month or so, the hunt for a salon in London continues.

Toni & Guy’s trendier younger sibling, Essensuals offers up to the minute styles and specialises in colour and innovation. This is a vibrant salon, always buzzing with activity, with clients and stylists sporting the wackiest of hairdos. This is a really good salon, where stylists will actually listen to your requests, which is hard to find among scissor happy hair stylists these days. Trained in the latest and most innovative styles, these guys know what they are doing and seem to have a lot of fun doing it.

Over the time I’ve lived in Glasgow, I’ve visited many hairdressers. I’ve always been duped into discount deals and spurred on by the previous haircut that I just wasn’t that happy with. My experience at Essensuals on St Vincenet Street however has been the exception. I’ve been twice and on both occasions I’ve been really chuffed with my style. The staff are very professional and will really listen to what you’re looking for, rather than what they think is best. It’s not cheap unfortunately– but with the 40% snap fax discount for students and their high standard, it’s worth it.

The most noticeable different between Essensuals and a lot of other hairdressers in town, are the staff. Essensuals staff are great — they’ll chat, they’ll bring you tea/coffee, they’ll even cut your hair! As a Toni and Guy Academy, you might think this place won’t give 5-star service, but it really does(I was a regular here for 3 years until my hairdresser, who had started out as a junior, moved up through the ranks to a senior stylist). My first ever haircut here was as a ‘hair model’ — a.k.a. for freeee — and I’ve never looked back. Students — you also get 40% your first cut with a snapfax… waaaay!
