Wonderfully friendly waiter. Décor is a little depressing and it felt cold. I liked the food and there is wine and beer which helps.

Oh my goodness, going to Harry Ramsdens is one of my fondest childhood memories. Whenever my dad brought me here I would chow down my fish supper kids meal as fast as I could in order to get maximum playing time on the huge slide. First of all my dad had to go up and ask for a coin to use the slide but as soon as he had that coin I knew I was going to have a whole load of fun! After I’d tired myself out on the slide my dad would buy me a delicious 99 ice-cream cone for the journey home. Aside from the amazing fun factor Harry Ramsdens fish was and still is among the best fish suppers I’ve ever tasted. It’s just sad to see that it’s a shadow of it’s former self and not as popular with families as it once was. I guess the location of this one has something to do with it as without a car it’s rather awkward to get to. I will need to take a trip back here soon!

I love Harry Ramsdens. They are hit and miss though, which is enough to put you off going entirely given the cost if you get a ‘miss’. It’s over on Springfield Quay near the cinema and bowling and is a good shout for lunch. Last time I was there I took ‘the haddock challenge’. The fish was without question the biggest fish I ever had and it took me an hour to eat it. I was actually sweating and had to put a bit in my back pocket just to get the certificate. Awesome.

Stuck beneath an overpass, this seems like an ill-judged location for a fish and chip chain shop: it doesn’t even connect to the local cinema complex, which makes it unlikely to catch too much passing trade. Ramsden’s had quite a reputation once, and still aims squarely at those who hanker after an old school take away: mushy peas, thick cut chips, plenty of batter. Personally, I find it too fatty, but the actual fish is well cooked and pure white, once you get past the batter. The real problem is the location. There is no reason to go there, and it looks frightening. The warm lighting– it is a standard design inside– allays some of the anxiety, but it really does seem to struggle to get customers.

When I was a kid and this place opened, I remember visiting here with my mum and dad for the self-proclaimed«world’s best fish and chips». We’d frequently have to wait over an hour for a table with other diners equally amazed at finding a fish and chip shop full of chandeliers, but the bustling adventure playpark outside kept me busy till our table was ready. Fast forward to 2009, the playpark is now a derelict wasteland, and the once bustling waiting area is lucky if it’s been used at all since 1995. It seems the general public are no longer impressed by a giant, luxury chippy, and while it still chugs along, Harry’s is now a grim shadow of it’s former self. Which is a shame, as the Fish and Chips are quite possibly good enough to give the boys from Anstruther a run for their money. The Ramsden’s brand seems to have found it’s niche though in shopping centres, airports, and retail parks, so even if this old relic doesn’t last too much longer, you’ll never have to go far for a cracking cod supper.

Following a massive walk along the Clyde my friend and I were feeling peckish and like a thirsty man in the desert finding water we came across this veritable temple to the potato. The chips are excellent and to call the portion generous is to say that lots of people live in New York. I have literally never had so many chips for £1.50. Not too greasy, not too over done with the right about of crispy babies at the bottom of the bag. My friend brought a portion of fish and he too said it was excellent. If you find yourself going for a wonder by the Clyde and get a tatty craving then march your legs to Harry Ramsden’s.

ok but not brilliant suspect the fish is frozen rather than fresh

Ahhh Harry Ramsden’s. I feel guilty giving them 3 stars, but to be honest, this particular Harry Ramsden’s in Glasgow served me well when i was in Glasgow last month. Harry Ramsden’s must be one of the oldest fast food institutions in Britain. I believe it was established in the 1930’s? Anyway, this is fast food and i think we can all agree it is not the nicest chippy in the UK! That being said, it’s cheap, and like Mcdonald’s, there’s always a moment when you crave some fish from Harry’s
