Stopped here for a bacon roll one morning and was drawn back by the amazingly good results! One time I sat inside for lunch(yes — another bacon roll) the owner(?) came over to ask if I would like a coffee because she was having one and it would be rude not to ask — no charge just plain old hospitality — if you’re in the area: treat yourself here! Lovely place!

This wee spot is a no frills breakfast and lunch takeaway shop towards the end of the St George’s Road parade. Popped in to grab a quick sandwich and ended up leaving with a steaming cup of lentil soup too(soup and sandwich deal £3). The owner is a lovely local lady and did a good job of up selling the soup deal on the basis it was a bitter day hen. Although there were a few stools to sit on I headed home. The soup was still piping hot after my 10 minute walk home and the sandwich(chicken tikka, lettuce on granary) was yummy and fresh tasting without being too heavily spiced or mayonnaisey. The lentil soup was absolutely superb and very clearly homemade as I could taste the ham stock. There were two other soup options available. No frills means there aren’t any fancy breads — you get what you get — and all the food and fillings looked homemade/made on site so don’t expect deli pretty. There were loads of other hot options inc. lasagne, chilli, bacon rolls etc. If you are after a quick freshly made hearty unpretentious lunch then this is a good option. There were a good few regulars in chatting when I was in, which I also liked.

Small café — take away on St George’s road, great for people on the road or on the way to work and need to grab something quick. Fast and friendly service bacon and egg roll £1.70

Situation: Hungry and needing breakfast near St George’s Road. This place works well for that. One caveat — This place can be great or terrible. Do not judge it quickly. It is in a great place and serves reasonably decent coffee and rolls. Unfortunately, the folks working here can be hit or miss. If this place is in your vicinity then please check it out. If you are just dropping by — be prepared. BTW — Not a big fan of the chairs but I see what they were trying to do.

I rather like The Fat Tomato. It’s sitting close by a lot of other sandwich stores so standard must be high. Thankfully, it is. Although it’s small, from what I gather this place probably fairs best with passing custom, from office workers and people in need of a quick hangover cure. It’s got a very amiable selection, with the usual mix of low key sandwich fillers such as ham to spicier and more exotic options such as peppers and chili chicken. The food in here is eye-poppingly cheap, with the sign outside boasting 2.50 for soup and a sandwich, and just under three pounds for lasagne which I thought was particularly excellent. It came as a surprise, then, that a latte came in at a pound eighty, but you can’t win them all. And for the area this place is situated in, it still beats Starbucks! The Fat Tomato is a great grazing ground if you fancy getting something a bit healthier and economical for a lunchtime snack. With efficient service and down to earth staff, this place fits in nicely with the high standard of Glasgow snack bars.

Not too far away from behemoths of the lunchtime trade such as Starvin Marvin’s and An Clachan, poor standards will simply not be tolerated at this relatively new sandwich shop. Thankfully, it’s excellent, and I like the name. Top marks.

Located on St Georges Road and a relative new addition to the street, the Fat Tomato stands on the site of another wee takeaway joint and if i’m honest, does pretty much the same thing if maybe in a more polished fashion. With your regular section of breakfast and filled rolls, baguettes and other such lunch time fodder, the Tomato is a clean wee joint that you can imagine does a good trade in morning and lunch times snacks. Good, but for me its to close to my new favorite place(See Mimi’s Kitchen) to tempt me in…
