It’s been quite a few years since l was last here and with the recent revamp and modernisation I came by with a friend for a late lunch while we where passing by. They have done a great job on the bar, looks pretty good, but sadly in the couple of weeks since the renovation holes have already appeared on the flooring, that’s what you get for buying on the cheap. I was wanting to order of the bar menu but strangely the bar staff or cook didn’t have a clue on the allergens, or provenance of the food so couldn’t order anything of the menu, shame as the food that l did come out did look good. The burgers are obviously still the defrost and serve ones as my friend had his food on the table in under 5 minutes.

OK so, I perhaps am judging unfairly as this is the go-to place for work nights out as it is so close to where I used to(and where my boyfriend and several good friends and colleagues) still work. It is ideal for bigger crowds, it is usually pretty quiet on a Friday night, there’s a good(video) jukebox, quick service and cheap drinks(apart from bottles of Brewdog’s Punk IPA — £4.30 a bottle?! :-O) I have had some great nights in here — if you’re looking to get smashed with a group of folk, you can’t go far wrong… maybe just be careful if there’s someone in your group who has a tendency to cause fights, because there are plenty of people up for a fight in here I reckon! Neddy but cheap and fun — and off the main drag of Sauchiehall Street = a blessing on Friday and Saturday nights!

I can see the bad in this place but I think I hold a little attachment to it and this is why it gets 3*. Let’s be positive. The Good reasons. It’s big, generally empty(when I start my session) for a decent sized group, cheap, music and small pool tables. No real hassle to get in unlike other places at times. As it is close to my work this is usually the kick off point. Get a few in then head off elsewhere, sometimes get too comfortable and stay. Bad side. Sometimes under staffed so the wait is too long even at like 3pm. Some beverages are finished. Last time it was Guinness on a Friday at 4pm. The food is OK nothing that would make you comeback. The punters can be all sorts of shapes and sizes. Loud, quiet and generally creepy. Toilets are also a mess. To sum it up. I like the place, been going there for a while. For someone new it’s difficult to enjoy this place when it sits smack bang in the middle of some other classic watering holes. With not too much of a difference in price, but offering a whole lot more.

A friend insisted we pop in to have a beer, and for me to try a cider beer. It was not that bad, in the berry or apple flavor. We sat outside, which was clearly the overly smoking section. If you have seen the movie airplane where he buys a smoking ticket, that is what I smelled like. Three people asked to borrow my lighter, though I don’t smoke, nor did my friend. The inside was loud, younger crowd. It grew busier just as we were beginning to depart the location. I didn’t have draft so cannot comment on them running out. Most likely I would not go back, I achieved trying the cider beer, check off the list.

Before you walk into the Hall make a quick observation of the folk standing outside having a fag. Ok do you see: Guys wearing pink tight fitting t shirts with American college crests on them… even in winter, when its raining?, chicks with neon t shirts on that would barely cover those that the garments size was actually intended to fit? And groups of really load young folk just shouting pish??? If you see any or, as is most likely, all three of these groups then you have no real excuse in going into this sticky, loud and very un pub like place. This is a pre club student drinking hole, aimed entirely at those who like to shout«waaaaaaay» and«oooooiiiiiii»…If your after a proper pint and a dafty free evening then stay firmly away from this or any of the other Scream pubs…

Fine for a big, daft night out, pubs like the Hall come in a garish yellow colour purely to deter the sort of people who may not initially know the score with them. Essentially a pre-club pub for students, you can expect cheap prices, loud jukeboxes and a plethora of horny freshers. Not my cup of tea, but undoubtedly in the right place with its location at the tip of the club stretch of Sauchiehall Street. I’d rather it here than anywhere else.

I’m a big fan of the Scream pubs, though none of them can really top Curlers, which has been my second home since I was legally able to drink. Behind Curlers it would probably be the Hall, mainly for being more ‘studenty’ and relaxing than the Ark. The Hall is a good bit more spacious than Curlers, though I have never seen it quite as busy to be honest. Perhaps because it is up the far end of Sauchiehall Street and quite a bit away from the universities and their associated halls of residence. Though it would probably make for a good choice as a pre-club venue in such a location, especially with its cheap prices typical of any Scream bar. There is the usual televisions, which show live football or music videos when the footy isn’t on. And, of course, the absolutely unbeatable £3.95 beer and burger. Seriously, I think this has to be the one thing I love the most about Scream pubs. While it is a studenty place though, you can still expect the odd creepy old man, just like in Curlers. Don’t let this put you off though.

The best way I can describe The Hall is The Goose for students. It’s right in the Sauchiehall club district, it’s pretty cheap, and it’s big enough to pack ‘em in. There are couches, sports on TV, and pub quiz machines aplenty, ensuring that it appeals to the right crowd. Weekly events include a pub quiz night, live music, and DJs on the weekends. Good place to get your friends together and watch the football or drink one another under the table. On the flipside, if you’re not a student or in your late teens/early twenties, this probably isn’t the place for you. On the whole it’s cheap and cheerful and a great place to start before heading to the Garage, ABC, etc.

I have to second the review by Darryl– everything you’d expect from a Scream pub, you’ll find here. Actually, I think it’s at the lower end of the Scream-pub specturm. It’s located at the end of Sauchiehall Street near Charing Cross and probably your only reason for venturing here is for the cheap booze. Even then, I can think of better alternatives on a street lined with watering holes.

Another Scream student-tastic bar. A little rough around the edges, but essentially The Hall plays host to your usual studenty type things — cheap food, cheap drinks and cheap service. I might just not be a fan of the whole yellow/black décor thing(eeeuurrggh), but i always feel like the floor, even though a percentage of it is carpet, is sticky, and I get the feeling that someone’s thrown-up down the side of several of the sofas… I might be wrong, but it just kinda makes me shiver a bit. If you’re looking for cheap though, this place is ideal.
