Ruby Chinese Restaurant

Have not been to the Ruby for quite some time. Nothing to do with the food or service, which has always been great over the many years I have eaten there. Unfortunately I can no longer climb the steep stairs, so how about installing a stair lift for the folks who no longer have the puff! I do so miss my visits.

Sitting in the window seat, admiring the view across the Clyde to Gourock as the sun set, I tried to recall how long it has been since I last ate here. At least 15 years, if not 20.
The Ruby is a staple of the food scene in Helensburgh, and was always a good option if you are in the area.
Wandering up the heavily decorated walls I was very aware that it doesn’t seem to have changed at all since I last visited, this is very much a Chinese restaurant that celebrates that very fact in all the usual ways.
That’s not to say it looks run down, it has certainly aged better than I have!
The menu offers everything you’d expect so honey glazed crispy beef strips for me, and sweet and sour chicken mandarin style for Kirsty.
Alas we were a little too early to catch the sunset but still enjoyed the view whilst we waited the few minutes it took for our food to arrive, and when it did it didn’t disappoint.
Presented with some carved flowers (I think mine was a potato) it was sweet, spicy, succulent and delicious, and whilst I could’ve been eating at any generic chinese restaurant in the West of Scotland, the view definitely helped make this a little bit more special (as did the company!).
The Ruby is one of those places that I’d class as dependable. It’s not an upmarket, high class kinda place, and doesn’t try to do be. Instead it focuses on providing good, friendly service, serving tasty reliable food, and all for a pretty good price.

Never ceases to amaze. The quality of their food is top notch. Been coming to this restaurant and ordering takeaways for years. This has been our family’s Christmas Eve meal location since I was too young to remember. Recently taken over by relatives of the previous owner they have made some valued improvements to the menu and a slight upgrade on the interior. Best time of the year to come here is Chinese New Year. The place is decorated accordingly and the staff are more enthusiastic than normal. Definitely recommend this to anyone looking for good quality Asian cuisine.

Great place to eat and cheap lunches great for partys or just a bite to eat.

The Ruby is a bit of an institution in Helensburgh, quite a famous local haunt.
It has a rather unaspiring frontage, with just a doorway leading to the restaurant upstairs, but the views over the River Clyde across to Gourock if you can get a window seat are excellent.
They serve a wide range of traditional Chinese/​Cantonese food, and I must say that out of all the Chinese restaurants and take-​aways in the town this is my favourite as I find that the meat is tender, veg seems to be fresh and the sauces are very tasty.
It isn’t the cheapest, but not overpriced and it’s well worth the extra 20p per portion or whatever it is! A nice place to have a family dinner or even just to collect a take-​away.

We had a really nice chinese takout from here this weekend which is a pleasant surprise for takeout in a small town!
There is a really good range of dishes, including lots of Vegetarian ones and it tasted really good heated up again the next day too!
