East restaurant is a favourite of my partners and I. With the 2 for 1 deal they offer on some nights, it makes it real value for money. We love curry and can honestly say that this offer one of the best selection in Leeds. The service is very friendly and prompt and the staff always remember you. They are even great with our 2 dogs who can sometimes be in the car, coming out to say hello and providing them with water. The Procharga is a favourite of ours and we order it every time! The décor may a bit dated but with the food and service that really doesn’t matter! Large car park at the rear for drivers. Highly recommended.

Unilocal Horsforth Pub Crawl 19−07−13. number 2 phnurgh really not bothered by this place. to be fair we came into have a drink rather have a curry, so as a bar it’s a bit airless(even though those massive windows are open), dark and loud. The cider was off, the beer was a bit warm and bar lady turned the music up on us so that we ended up having to shout at each other. NEXT!

It’s a restaurant. With a bar. But a bar that ‘seemed’ very understocked. Which is to say that everything I actually asked for they’d ran out of. So I ended up on Peroni. I’ve not drank Peroni in 5 years. All the front doors open to let some air in and heat out, comfy chairs and a good wafting smell of naan bread meant that it wasn’t totally horrible though, and if the steady stream of diners were anything to go by it at least seems like the food might be half decent. Towards the end of our stay the staff decided to turn the music up to levels that made it hard to talk though — perhaps getting confused with the dark décor into thinking we were in a techno club or something. I wouldn’t be against trying it in the future for its food, but as a bar there just wasn’t enough about it(i.e. drinks) to make me ever venture back.

Friday night curry night!!! Always a good ring to it!!! We had a Livingsocial voucher to use so booked in for last Friday 7.30pm. We arrived promptly & as the other reviewer has said– the whole venue set up confused us. It features a bar and seemingly comfy seating area and then on the raised area behind you have the dining area with a rather awful dessert fridge plonked in it. We ordered drinks at the bar and were shown to our table which was one of the ‘booths’. Usually I quite like these as you get a more intimate feel and a little more privacy then being stuck out in the middle tables but the way it was furnished didn’t really suit the place. The seats were a bit too distant from the table, there was a hole in the table filled with ice(useful if you’d bought wine or bottles of beer but as we hadn’t I thought it should have been covered up) and the light above the table had a HUGE and very low lampshade on it! We chose off the menu which features some lovely sounding meals and specialities yet when my friends asked for just a side dish of vegetables the waiter didn’t seem to comprehend and mentioned Saag aloo or gobi aloo– none of which was what had been asked for. He went away with the order nonetheless. The atmosphere in the place is a bit strained with a rather eclectic mix of music going on in the background. The furnishings are plush and the interior quite dull due to the dark wallpaper and dark wood finish– not ideal when you want to see what you’re eating! Our starters arrived and we were happy enough initially. My friend had the special starter which was described as– Haddock & prawns marinated in herbs, spices, ginger & garlic grilled to perfection So why was it covered in cheese? He was not impressed! Also, when I moved my plate closer to me I realised that the actual plate was filthy underneath with remnants of food on it! The food overall was OK– nothing earth shattering though and it differed greatly to the wonderful descriptions! We brought our issues to the attention of the waiter when he came to clear away and he said nothing-just looked at us blank! After quite a wait from having our starters our mains had not arrived and each member of staff who walked passed who we tried to call to check on the food ignored us! Off I went for what I thought was a quick loo break to return and find my food on the table getting cold. I find that rather bad manners for food to be put on the table when the diner is not there! The food order didn’t come complete either. In asking for a side dish of veg this had been processed as a main course dish so one of the actual main courses was delayed. 3 of the serving dishes were chipped, the food wasn’t exactly warm and the Rogan Josh had lentils in despite it not being mentioned on the menu! The naan tasted stale and the lemon rice had a greasy taste to it. We ate up and sat with dirty dishes for about 20 minutes before anyone bothered to come back at which point we asked for the bill. We’d given the voucher info when we ordered. We were then asked for it when we requested the bill and another member of staff asked for it again when they brought the bill. What is wrong with these people!!! Our drinks order we’d placed between the courses had to be given to 2 different members of staff to get it right also All in all I’ve given 2 stars as the price we paid for the deal probably covered what the food was worth, the food overall was OK and we didn’t leave much but there is so much room for improvement. I’m sure most of the customers dining in there were doing so with the same voucher but I certainly won’t be going again let alone paying full price. The service is very poor, the staff either don’t understand what you’re asking them or are just plain rude in acknowledgement and they really need to up their game here or we won’t be seeing them there too long!

In the old days, before the Mini MacDoos came along, Mr MacDoo and I used to live on New Road Side. As DINKYs(Dual Income, No Kids Yet!), we ate out all the time and used to go to The Last Viceroy a lot, it was a firm favourite. So when we decided to go out on a long overdue date at the end of last year, we thought we’d go back to our old haunt. We were a tad confused when we got there and it looked to have closed down, but the former Suburban Style bar next door looked to have been refurbished and re-opened as Enigma, incorporating Indian restaurant East. We weren’t sure if the Last Viceroy had just moved upstairs, but regardless, we figured since we were in the mood for a curry we’d check it out. We went inside and the surroundings were quite nice, but the whole venue seems a bit confused. The front of the place is like a bar /nightclub, then as you step up to a raised area at the back it turns into a restaurant. We sat down and ordered some poppadoms to nibble while we waited for our mains. They arrived with a delicious tray of pickles and dips and we munched away happily. As a calorie counter, I went for the Chicken Tikka dish for my main, It was really good, the meat was beautifully moist and wonderfully flavoured, and the portion was so huge that I really didn’t need much of the carby sides that we had ordered to share between us! Speaking of which, the rice and naan that we shared were really nice, both lovely and fluffy, and very tasty. Mr MacDoo went for a dopiaza, which I pinched a spoonful of for research purposes and again, it was lovely and tasty, and not too oily. Price wise it was fairly reasonable, the drinks weren’t too expensive either, I suppose that’s the advantage of it being within a bar, you don’t pay that ‘restaurant premium’ on your drinks! All in all it was nice, and perhaps I’m being a little bit harsh giving three stars rather than four. But it definitely loses one for the noisiness and location within a bar. The other star is lost because while the food was lovely, it wasn’t quite ‘five star’ standard. Nevertheless, I think we’d go up there again if we were out for an evening in Horsforth and fancied a curry. Maybe I’ll rethink and add the fourth star back in after the next visit, watch this space!
