The Ancient Market of Kingston upon Thames has been in action for over 800 years and in my youth was massively tarted up to involve water features and a very shiny gold statue of Queen Victoria. On a weekday you have plenty of your classic cockney fruit & veg sellers but also increasingly stalls selling things like ostrich burgers and last time I was in town on a Saturday there was enough street food to rival some of the great central London markets. There’s also way more space to sit than any of those markets, and even if you can’t find a spot in the market place you are seconds away from the riverfront which is also all re-done and fancy. Also remember you are close by the Coronation Stone, upon which 7 kings were crowned in the 900s! Yeah…I love Kingston. And I know a disturbing amount of obscure historical facts about it.

What can i say! I would rarely contemplate eating a Pork Pie, never mind chasing down with Chili Chocolate Brownie but that is what I did on Sunday. The Kingston market is small, but WOW so much good food to eat whilst sitting by the river watching the Swans lick their lips(beaks) in jealousy.

Call me prejudice but I am a great fan of Kingston market. Having spent many years of my working life walking by the ancient market that’s been there since people rode on horseback and not in 7 cylinder motor cars, I’d always loved the river the nearby snooker hall, and the old buildings, some still therein my old work place a listed building, now a pizza place, that was an engineering workshop, assembling plastic extrude rs. Oh those were the days no computers, bad train services, ferret on the line to Norbiton delays, and of course the old style small shops like stationers selling singular items, a pencil, a pen, no not quill, I am that ancient! Always worth going down memory lane…
