Michel’s is a beautiful bakery and is perfectly situated in Hyde Park. Given that the cafes are plentiful it’s great to have such a lovely indie bakery right on the bus path — perfect for an early morning eat just before you catch that bus into work/uni/town! The staff have always been lovely and you can tell as soon as you go in that the produce is all homebaked — the air of delicious fresh breads and cakes being hot in the air. I’m really useless and not very adventurous when it comes to foods, usually I find something Iike and then I stick with it religiously, but popping in here I always maintain to try something different. I haven’t yet been disappointed either and at the prices they have it’s not that much of a risk in going for it! Pastries, cakes, breads, sandwiches — it feels good to go indie and it tastes even better.

So surprised was I to see that Aneila was first to ‘do’ Michel’s that I hadn’t even bothered to look if someone had already written a review. Although on the major route into town from the student areas it is easily passed by as the sign is dark and window displays uninviting(although I think the sweet things are ok, this doesn’t mean they are fresh as sweet can last a long time) also I have asked them for yeast before and they didn’t have any so I’m not too sure if they bake much on-site. I’m a cheese and branston loaded in bread of the brown variety gal meself and here they give fillings of good proportions in fresh bread(a number of times I have visited other sandwich shops and suffered from a stale loaf). Not more you could ask for, oh apart from a good price to, generally good.

I’m surprised to be the first to review Michel’s, the bakery whose name nobody knows how to pronounce. On the hungover trek up to uni as a student, the perfect thing to get you through that agonising lecture was to stock up at Michel’s and make sure your stomach wasn’t going to gurgle at your sudden need for food. With papers on the little plastic table with chairs on one side of the counter for those waiting, it’s the perfect place to sit and reflect as you wait for the lovely woman behind the counter to prepare your tuna mayo salad on brown. Although Michel’s window display leaves a lot to be desired and does prompt the odd passer by to question how long those bakewell tarts have actually been there, they do make a good sarnie, with all the choices chalked up on the board as you enter. I can’t speak for any of their other baked goods, other than their bread, but the flapjacks are a nice addition. The sarnies are excellently priced, leaving the students with no choice but to go back again and again.
