Being a family run, totally independent bakery Murton’s offer some of the cheapest delights available from a bakery for miles around. This rather secret little place is quite amazing. It looks run-down and shut when it’s open. Only if you have an attentive eye can you notice open from closed by the boards in the window at closing time. On offer are sandwiches, pasties(some reports say too salty others — from a friend of south-western origin therefore one could say an expert — say really good), bread in many forms as well as tasty cakes; my personal favourites are vanilla slices, Eccles and carrot although I still have many to try. On top of this you can get cheap crisps and other snacks and the previous day’s bread at a knocked down price. All in all rather brilliant.

Despite looking like some underground operation rather unconvincingly disguised as a ‘bakery’, Murton’s actually sells some of the tastiest — and cheapest — baked goods around. Pity the poor souls flocking into the Co-Op up the road to stock up on processed white bread and expensive cakes, and join those in the know instead to queue up for freshly made pies, pasties, bread and cakes at the Murton’s counter. A farmhouse loaf comes in cheaper than supermarket sliced white, and I’ve been known to make the walk over from Woodhouse for the chocolate brownies alone.

Nearly everyone I have recommend Murton’s Bakery too had presumed the shop was rundown or even closed! Both exterior and interior are shabby, rundown and far from pleasing to the eye. However you cannot walk past Murton’s and avoid the inviting fresh bread smell. Once you have abolished your preconceptions and ignored the rundown presentation you will be taken aback with the array of handmade cakes, breads, pasties, pastries and sandwiches in front of you. Merton puts Gregg’s to shame! Not only do their cakes taste better but they cost a quarter of the price. The varieties are endless from bake-well tarts to family sized pies to chocolate brownies. In addition to Merton’s sweet treats the shop offers pasties, sausage rolls and fresh bread at tiny prices as well as hot sausage, egg and bacon sandwiches in the morning. Watch out McDonald’s breakfast, this is tastier and cheaper! The shop is run by two lovely elderly Yorkshire ladies who really brighten up your day with their smiles, broad accents and humour. Their homemade cooking really is fantastic, and you won’t believe the prices! You can get cakes from as much as 10p and family pies for under a pound! watch out McDonald’s

Great value — freshly baked bread cheaper than cheap white sliced in the supermarket next door. Great value pies, sweets and puddings too, which make for a great bakery! Yummy!
