Almost definitely the best gym in Leeds, though you’ll pay for the privilege of using it. Virgin took over the old Esporta around a year ago and almost immediately started a program of replacing everything in the building; there is little sign that the gym colours used to be burgundy, with most of the fixtures and fittings now adorned with Virgin red. The staff are friendly, the machines and fitness objects are all shiny and new, there is little overcrowding and you can pretty much get on any equipment you want with minimal waits(weights are maybe a different matter, but cardio machines are abundant). beyond the gym floor there is swimming pool. There is a sauna. There is a steam room. And all are kept tidy and looked after by attentive staff who I’m sure should someone be drowning would be right on it and baywatching straight into the heated pool. The only 2 issues I have with the gym are a) the frequency that equipment seems to be out of order(which isn’t a massive issue as there usually are other machines that can be used), and b) the price… but having recently traded up from an Esporta membership(£62 a month) to a Virgin membership(£45 a month) I’m a little happier! I not just have to find the motivation to drop by at least 5 times a week instead of The Adelphi…

Choosing a gym is a tricky business. You need it to be sufficiently nice to motivate you to go but not too expensive to preclude you from signing up. Too often I find myself signing up somewhere and wishing I hadn’t shortly afterwards. Virgin’s gym at The Light ticks all the boxes for me. It has ultra modern equipment(featuring individual TVs!), fun classes and a nice pool. Even the changing rooms are nice. Time will tell whether I use it enough to justify my membership but at the moment I am a big fan!
