Had a meal with work colleagues and the food, wine and service was excellent. It was a Wednesday evening so it wasn’t too busy. Would go back…

Came to Alma de Cuba with a group of 6 for dinner. The venue is amazing — it’s an old Polish church, the ceiling is incredibly high and the décor is gorgeous and grand. Appropriate for a date or a fun night with friends, it’s very energetic and loud. A live band was there when we came for dinner and they were so noisy we had to shout to hear each other. So don’t go with anybody that you don’t already know well, or you won’t be able to talk much! They have quite a big cocktail menu, I can’t find the drinks menu online, but I know mine was tasty though not especially strong. I think a few people found theirs a bit sweet. I’d recommend sticking with sangria, which we enjoyed, or wine — more drunk for your buck. And it won’t take as long — the bar was very busy on a Friday night and it took ages to get seen let alone served. We ate upstairs, overlooking the ground floor, a lovely view of the whole restaurant. Our group of 6 ordered some bread and shared the Sabores de Alma and the Hoi Sin Costillas(ribs!) The ribs were great — sticky and sweet with meat that fell off the bone. The sharing platter could easily be shared by several people, though it’s recommended for two. Two people would be too full for their mains if they shared this! It had asparagus risotto(fine), duck spring rolls(yum), ham terrine(double yum), and some bruschetta with goats cheese and tomato tapenade. Great starter platter overall, would definitely recommend it — but don’t skimp on the ribs! For my main I got the«jerk chicken». It was incredibly juicy, some of the most tender chicken I’ve had. Despite the warning on the menu, it isn’t very spicy. The coconut rice had an odd taste, and I found it very unappealing. The fried plantains totally disappointed — they weren’t sweet! I thought they’d be lovely sweet plantains but they were just plain-tasting savory ones coated in flavorless batter. And I was so excited! I don’t think they know how to do Latin food here — despite the name, hardly any of the food is from that part of the world. Rather odd, really. The South American greens make a nice health side, although there’s nothing South American about plain kale, green beans, and broccoli. I feel tempted to give it four stars — much of the food was very good and I’d certainly recommend you check it out. But it was SO noisy, and the missteps in the food(plantains, rice, greens) were disappointing, as were the pricey, non-strong, too-sweet cocktails. Other people seemed to enjoy their mains more than me though, so I’d go back and give it another go. Think I’d avoid a live music night though!

As a visitor from the U.S. I have never been treated so rudely by an establishment. The door staff and bouncers were horrendous and clearly on a power trip. I would avoid this place unless you are a local.

Came here on recommendation. Quite a quiet Sunday night. Ignored at the bar for 5 minutes. Bar staff avoided all eye contact. Went over to Revolution. Go to Revolution, much better service.

Night Clubs and Restaurants are an ideal place to enjoy on a night, but Alma De Cuba(used to be a church) was the beat Ihave been to. A classy, and energetic place that would be an ideal for a romantic and fun night with a partner. The place is lit with candles and dim lights that would make you welcoming. In terms of services, the waiters provide really good services, friendly and are willing to provide suggestions when you want suggestions on food. Also the foods are presented really well on the plate that it would tempt you to eat it. Although the foods are expensive, the quality of the food seems worth it. Overall it is a place worth going to

We were staying in a hotel across the street and didn’t notice this restaurant until a cab driver pointed it out. Checked it out on-line and decided we just had to try this place if for nothing else but the atmosphere and décor. It’s an old church built in 1788. WOW, beautiful inside. The wait staff were very pleasant and friendly. The food… what can I say, that was definitively one of the best meals I have ever had. My wife had the Sticky Fig Daiquiri which was outstanding, if you like figs. We both had the Corn and Sweet potato bisque, which was one of the best soups we’ve had. Well seasoned, and just the right amount of heat. The parmesan krackle that came with the soup was also great. We did try their breads with flavored oils, and loved the oils. We split the BROCHETAS: Marinated lamb mojito — prime lamb fillet marinated in garlic, honey, lime & mint, served with minted natural yoghurt. This was very tasty. All dishes were very well presented. Overall, if I were in the neighborhood, I would absolutely visit here again.

So coming here was a huge surprise. I was on Contiki and we were meant to eat some place else but they were shut so the guys at Contiki managed a last minute booking at this place. I was told this never happens and to please not make this the standard for which we compared every other meal on tour. What a stroke of luck! The décor in this place is amazing — it had a very woodland feel about it with low candles and mounted animal heads on the walls. Antlers everywhere! The food was amazing! As we were such a big group there was a limited menu but still enough to satisfy the whims of every traveller. The toffee baked cheesecake was a standout! I doubt I will ever be able to come here again, but if you do find yourself in Liverpool, can spare the pounds and feel like a bit of a fancy night out, this is the place to hit!

The setting of this restaurant is absolutley stunning. We loved it. My son said his chicken dish was one of the best meals he’s ever eaten. This is a must while in Liverpool.

An amazing reconfiguration of the former church space — where most of my family were christened, married and eulogized in times past. Make sure you pop to the loos — the incredible sink set up is perfect. Thanks for keeping the space alive!!!

One of the best places I was able to eat at on my trip through the UK. Recommended to us by our hotel concierge, Alma de Cuba offered a trendy and sophisticated atmosphere. Although we didn’t have reservations, they were able to put us at a beautiful table overlooking the bar below and with a great view of the grandiose chapel. They had a great variety of dishes and a GREAT wine list! We ordered a bottle of the Celeste Crianza(2009) and were satisfied to the last drop. If you are visiting Liverpool, this is a quintessential hotspot you have to see for yourself.

Alma De Cuba is essentially three different places all at once: a very good restaurant, a booming, loud nightclub and a quiet place to have an amazing drink. We’ve visited all three«personalities» of Alma De Cuba and we prefer the first and last by far. Early in the afternoon or evening, you can sit at the bar while a skilled bartender takes his time to truly craft a drink. It may take a few minutes to make, but the wait is well worth it. They take pride in their work and it shows(or tastes!). We have sampled most of the drinks on the menu during the quiet hours and can personally vouch that they are all wonderful. Special props go to the Mojito though. I’ve sampled them at many, many places and no one can seem to hit the perfection of the Alma De Cuba Mojito. If you go later on at night, the atmosphere completely changes. The music is much, much louder, the clientele is different and the drinks are nowhere near as good as they are in the afternoon — you’re waiting 25+ minutes and the bar staff are completely fried. Granted, if you’re into more of a showy social scene, it’s perfect for you. It just depends on your preferences. As far as the restaurant is concerned, the food is great. The tapas menu is not only tasty but very reasonably priced for such an upscale place. The dinner menu has a fun Caribbean flare. Last time we were there, we had the duck spring rolls as a starter and the jerk chicken and filet of beef as mains. All were excellent. The main event of that meal was the Ron Zacapa Experience. A warmed snifter of prized Ron Zacapa rum, strong espresso, luscious orange & chocolate fudge and a teeny glass of mineral water. A must for anyone who admires rum as we do.

Alba de cuba is a very high quality food and drink establishment in liverpool city centre. It’s in a beautifully converted church building and its almost entirely candle lit, very romantic indeed! We started our evening there with some cocktails from its great ranging drinks menu. A cosmoplolitan for herself and a long island iced tea for myself(which considering it wasn’t even on the list, was a very good balanced mix). Then onto the meal. Each course came in perfect time allowing you to eat at a comfortable pace without rushing. For starters she had the duck spring rolls and i had the butternut squash rissotto. Both were absolutly gorgeous! Followed by the honey glaze ribs, which were alot spicier than i had anticipated, but still very tasty! she had the piri piri chicken salad, which was also fantastic! And for desert we shared the sticky toffee pudding, which was unreal! I can honestly say that alma de cuba was one of the most amazing eating experiences i’ve ever had! Highly recommend and can’t wait for my next visit!

Alma de Cuba is a bar and restaurant which certainly stays long in the memory as it offers something unique to the customer which is always a good thing. The place itself is small from the outside but has enough room to offer a comfortable dining experience within and the key thing is that they manage to make you feel very relaxed. They do things differently here even offering a menu known as the gospel which is available as an alternative form of worship on a Sunday lunch time and although I’m not sure the cathedral would approve it certainly is a novel idea. The food here is great with their steak and brazen beef being particular highlights for me accompanied by a healthy portion of wine which went down very well indeed. The staff are good and although the service can be a tad slow it is worth the wait in the end and is the perfect place for something more than your average lunch.

I’m not a huge fan of Cuban/South American food but I love this restaurant, it’s great for families, groups of friends, couples, everyone I know has always enjoyed themselves here. The atmosphere is really fun, and it just makes you smile. There is a great bar where you can get cocktails or any other drink under the sun before your meal. There is plenty of space to sit down and enjoy your drink, you don’t feel like you’re being shoved into a corner while you wait, or even worse, told to wait outside. It’s really welcoming. The food is pretty good, I had the Chicken Massaman which was delicious but other members of my party didn’t think much of their main meals. When we told the staff they were extremely helpful and offered to serve us up something else but we declined because we’d eaten most of it anyway. It can be quite expensive here if you’re out for a 3 course meal — around £50 per person — but the atmosphere is well worth the money.

I don’t know Liverpool well at all but had met a friend who was there on tour and taken her out for dinner. We picked Alma De Cuba based on the menu outside and when we got inside it didn’t disappoint. A converted church with a really cool theme which includes a bar, a cubicled eating area and a restaurant. Great for groups, a date, a work night out and the food is beautiful!

A superbly restored, beautifully kept 18th Century Russian Orthodox church. Can you imagine a more spectacular setting for a restaurant? If you ever have someone to impress, be it colleagues, dates or new friends, you can’t go far wrong with this beauty. It’s absolutely luxurious, and even harbours the original altar and pews amongst bright, glowing candles and a stunning atmosphere. The interior design all sits suitably within its gorgeous shell and the location on Seel Street is pretty central. The food is Mediterranean in style, all served on a tapas basis — it can be rather dear but it’s certainly worth heading there as a treat and I personally think it’s rather reasonable in terms of what you get for what you pay for. It’s delicious, and that’s the main thing. The vegetarian choice can be a little limited if you’re avoiding fish though. The cocktail menu is very impressive too with plenty of choice; they can be pricey but they’re worth pushing the boat out for. There are salsa lessons here, you can host parties and the staff will bend over backwards to give you exactly what you’re looking for(I spoke to them about the potential for putting on something in here) — all in all any night here would make for a great spectacle. The service is supreme, it can sometimes be a little slow but that doesn’t bother me in the slightest as it simply gives one more time to drink in the amazing surroundings. Accompanying the excellent cocktail menu is a very sophisticated wine list, full of tasty offerings. It’s different, it’s visually staggering and I love bringing friends here to watch their faces light up. Just lovely.

The race on a Friday and a Saturday night to watch the petals fall off the mezzanine at Alma de Cuba has to be seen to be believed. If you happen to be on the train that arrives into central station at 10:30 you’ll be greeted by the sight of glammed up grown women attempting to run in high heels so as not to miss paper petals being thrown from the balcony at the Cuban themed bar. It is impressive in its own way and the carnival dancers that accompany the drop are an interesting interruption. The place itself is very impressive — a converted church festooned with dripping candles. For me though none of this really makes up for what one of the other Unilocalers here identified as the ‘douchebag factor.‘ The place is swimming in pretentious idiots swilling overpriced champagne hoping against hope that a girl running in for the petal drop might trip over and they get a look at their knickers. I have never eaten here but probably never will, so much has that little story I came up with there incensed me.

It all depends on what day you decide to come here to get the most of Alma’s potential. Set in an old church dating back to the mid 1700s, the interior is easily one of the most impressive bars or restaurants in the city as lots of the original features have been retained such as the pews, stained glass and gold ornaments. There is something appealing about drinking on an altar without it being followed by a stale wafer! The food is anything but stale and is regularly regarded as one of the best restaurants in town but with starter ranging from £6 — £10 and mains from £11 — £25 it shouldn’t really be done on a budget but there is a good lunchtime tapas menu if you just fancy a quick nibble with a pint. As I say though, this place is probably best enjoyed early week as Friday and Saturday nights do attract big crowds and there are often queues to get in. The bar is expensive but with a good array of cocktails some might find it worth the wait but I think there are better cocktail bars around.

Good old Alma, been around for a while and still hasn’t gotten any less pretentious. Don’t get me wrong, I love the actual place, its just the general clientele on Friday and Saturday nights that puts me off. For example, the last time I was there I was on a cocktail night with a group of girlfriends I hadn’t seen for a while, and we were waiting patiently at a crowded bar at around midnight on a Friday. Next thing, this mid-to-late-30s guy cut between me and my friend as if trying to get through the crowd. The people around him attempted to give him some space, at which point he immediately elbowed his way to the front of the bar. He then leaned over the bar and thrust a wrinkled fiver in the hand of the nearest barman and said«I’m being served next». The barman attempted to explain that there were various other groups of people who had been waiting, and continued to serve the group he was with. And then he served this idiot. At this point, everyone around started tutting and I suggested in an undertone that we all tip our multi-coloured cocktails over his pristine white shirt. He is the reason I don’t go to Alma on a weekend. Having said that, the décor is amazing, as it is an old church that has retained its altar and structure, but been glammed up with antler chandeliers and candles and dark and glamorous furniture. The cocktails are lovely if not a little pricey(mostly over £5 for the simplest) and the music is eclectic. There is also a restaurant upstairs which serves the standard small-servings-nicely-arranged-on-large-plates type food, and if you get there at the right time there is confetti thrown from the balconies and Cuban dancing girls entertaining everyone. On a weekday it is quieter and nicer and you don’t feel so bad for not wearing the latest fashion trends. You can also see the bar from where you are sat. Overall, it’s definitely somewhere I would recommend if you have never been, but only if you have the patience of a saint on a weekend!

Allerdings vom Alter her eher 25 aufwärts.
