I have to say, Chameleon is one of the few bars that actually looks better of a day. While I was wandering the back streets of Liverpool’s city centre, as you do, I came across Chameleon for the first time. It looked pretty cool and I made a mental note to return with my girls in the future. Recently, a group of us were out and required further alcoholic sustenance, we made a beeline for Chameleon. It was very busy, good sign, but there wasn’t a real atmosphere. We used the facilities, had one drink and left. Nothing special at all I’m afraid. Everywhere is dark, there’s little décor and it lacks character. I have heard a free barbeque is held here which is very popular, maybe it’s better then.

I have noticed this place now for ages but there has been little about the place to entice me inside, even friends who have been have little say about the place. However the name of Chameleon seems to be everywhere and accompanied by a vibrant black and white lined poster campaign with an enigmatic women at its centre. It seemed to promise an edgy, cool even psychadelic quality to it, brilliant. Yup nothing quite like that. In fact it was everything I had thought from the many times I had passed it by. The space is empty, what feels like a really vast space, which is not helped by very few customers. The interior is a mish mash of seats and chairs that look a lot older and worn than they are — it’s like their designer cobbled it together with a hangover. I’m a bit fussy when it comes to cocktails and after recently going out my way to several places in the city centre to try some — cheers Unilocal!— Chameleon is not quite up there with some of its neighbours but on the plus side they are 241 on Wednesday and there are other drink offers throughout the week.

A big, loud, trendy cocktail bar, the Chameleon does a poor job of camouflaging into the background. Tut tut, what kind of a name choice was that? Painfully unfunny comments aside, I didn’t find much to like about this place. The cocktail experts known as staff are indeed very friendly but in an insurance salesman kind of way. You get the feeling they just want you to buy the most exorbitantly-priced drink and get the hell out. Perhaps it’s just me. Compared to the preened and pampered customers dancing round me, I must have looked like Worzel Gummidge trying to join Ocean’s Eleven. Still, I’d prefer it if the barman didn’t make this achingly apparent.

Chameleon is exactly the kind of bar that this part of the city needed. Plagued by cheesy venues around the corner in concert square, Chameleon offers a bit of glass and a wide range of cocktails combined with incredible music. They have some great live acts on throughout the week, including the legendary Xander and the Peace Pirates as their house band! They have DJ’s playing over the weekend, and play a great mix of mowtown and modern soul music. They do a great range of bespoke and traditional cocktails, although these are quite pricey! They also offer a wide range of beers, and tend to bend away from traditional beers in their bottle department. The staff really know their stuff and are keen to help and advise you on your next tipple, although there is a bit of flair bar going on, and not to a particularly good level, which just looks a bit naff when all you want is a beer! All in all, this place is well worth a visit halfway through a night out!

Coming out of FACT across the way, dejected at missing out on the film screening of Bill Hicks(sold out, boo!), the shining beacon of light that is Chameleon Bar became my consolation. A sign read, Wednesday 241 cocktails. ANY cocktails. Now these aren’t just any cocktails, these are Chameleon cocktails(sorry M&S), they make all the mixers themselves, so the strawberry purée that makes your daquiri so fresh and flavoursome, yep, they made it all from scratch. It’s two for one on the same cocktail so a friend and I got margaritas, now this usually isn’t my first choice, but it is now. They tailor each drink to your specifications and give recommendations on what’s best. I think we ended up with chili in ours but you could get flavours added, they like the blackberry. So for £7 we got two nectars of cocktail perfection, great service, a gorgeous surrounding, the sofas, wow they are comfy and there are lots of little areas created in an open plan space to make it cosy. Affordable way of trying out some of the best mixed cocktails in town served with flairs. They also do a free BBQ on Fridays 6.30−8pm. How can you say no to that!
