We recently dined at the Mayflower after a two year hiatus. We had hitherto considered this restaurant to be one of the best Chinese restaurants in Liverpool. Sadly, based on our most recent experience it seems to have significantly deteriorated. The food is now mediocre both in appearance and taste. The service is now very downmarket also. Too bad: a previously excellent restaurant is now an also-ran. We won’t be going back.

Stopped for a meal for two here after a show at the Arena as it was open until the small hours even on a Sunday and within walking distance. Whilst the food was pretty good, it was your standard Chinese fare and nothing out of the ordinary. The service was poor — rushed to order, plates cleared whilst still eating and communication difficulties as they didn’t understand much of what was said. If you’re after some basic Chinese food and aren’t bothered about the service this may suit you, but if you’re looking for a pleasant dining experience go elsewhere.

This is a westernised Chinese restaurant, which serves enjoyable Chinese food that you would get from many takeaways. Although enjoyable I personally prefer Chinese restaurants that aren’t just cooking to western style meals.

The Mayflower is one of my favourite places to eat Chinese food in Liverpool and this is quite a compliment as the choice is quite simply astonishing and very varied indeed. The Mayflower caught my eye one night as it was all lit up and I soon found that I had discovered a gem of a Chinese restaurant. The décor here is very nice indeed and the surroundings make you feel very confident that here you are going to receive an excellently prepared meal and this could not be more true. The staff here were great and they really impressed me with their hard work and efficiency as well as being very friendly and just generally helpful. The food it goes without saying is as impressive as everything else here and the value is good to boot, there really is not a weak point here. The choice may be wide and varied when it comes to choosing an eatery Liverpool but make time for the Mayflower and you will be pleased you did so.

Okay, recommended by the Good Food Guide, this is a promising start. Mayflower Restaurant is a pretty central Chinese restaurant that excels in its banquets, and is far better for group gatherings than a more intimate occasion. It’s welcoming and friendly and has a warm atmosphere, but it’s a bustling, busy and loud ambience and the fact that karaōke is on the menu, even if it is confined to private function rooms, should tell you everything. It’s fully licensed until 2am too which is another sign. The food is classic banquet fare, tasty enough but nothing that blows your socks off and it seems people come here more for the good time and a bit of stomach lining than a gourmet experience. Still, it has its place and purpose, and if that’s what you’re in the mood for I’d heartily recommend it because it does what it says on the tin.

Every major city these days seems to have a china town of some sort, with some form of gambling outlets, karaōke bars and neon lit restaurants it brings a bit of chinese delight to a city centre. Now aside from the escapism value of visiting China towns across the UK, I have become cynical about the quality of food in such hubs. Mainly from a few bad cases of food poisoning. Mayflower while doesn’t fit into that bad category, it is very much average. The service wasn’t upto much, I found it difficult to communicate with the staff and found them to be slightly unresponsive. When I did manage to order my fried udon noodles they arrived in good time but didn’t set my tastebud world on fire. Mayflower is fine, just fine, A-OK, but is that what you want when you eat out, who knows. After a night out when concluding the night? Perhaps yes. On any other occasion? «May» be not…

The Mayflower is one of the best places in Liverpool for no nonsense traditional Chinese food. Apparently the dishes are Peking & Cantonese. It takes full advantage of some old and new Chinese stereotypes including neon lights and the faux green tiled roofing. Their website talks about their private karaōke rooms with«state of the art» computerised machines and«High Fidelity» audio. I am confused by the Mayflower name and boat theme. I could have sworn the Mayflower sailed from Plymouth to America, not China? The menu is interesting and varied with house specials, happy hours, banquets and buffets. Their website could certainly do with an update.

This has been a popular place for me to go in past years when China Town wasn’t even a consideration for a late night meal, never mind even thinking about curries. The Mayflower was the first place anyone thought of when it was 2am and we wanted a bit of food. These days, I’ve learned to settle for cheesy chips, but back in my youth my eyes were too big for my belly and I’d always decide on a 3 course meal and never make it past the prawn crackers. This goes to show how nice the staff are though. I remember one particular night when two blokes who could’ve been our dads asked if they could take me and my mate for a meal as we were waiting for taxis home at 2am. Feeling mischievous, we agreed and went to the Mayflower, where these guys insisted on ordering nearly every banquet on the menu. Of course, we couldn’t eat it all, so the staff, without even a trace of coolness, removed everything from the table again and doggy bagged it. The old men payed and we skipped off with a week’s worth of microwavable food in plastic bags. Priceless! But that aside, it is a nice restaurant to go to, and they now have karaōke rooms instead, for the full Chinese experience…
