Peacocks smell of plastic clothing when you walk in, which really doesn’t appeal to me. This giant store has imitations of more expensive retail fashion and some catwalk-inspired trends. The shop is fairly easy to navigate and is very clean, with a row of tills at the back. There never seems to be a queue in here which I think is excellent as if you enter Primark or some similar store the waiting-to-pay line is always ridiculously long. Adjacent to other retailers in the centre of Liverpool I’m not sure Peacocks can compete as a mid-range fashion store. It’s cheap but not as low-priced as Primark and not quality enough to be on the same level as Topshop. What I do like about Peacocks though is the fantastic array of accessories and shoes. A decent store but nothing special!

This branch of Peacocks is absolutely gargantuan and very well lit, almost fluorescently so. In fact it reminds me a little of a warehouse which is probably not a great comparison given that the place is a clothing retailer. But now that I’ve started on the warehouse comparison it’s difficult to escape the idea of it — the layout is a bit warehousey, except for a few displays on tables, trunks and in faux open wardrobes all the clothes are in long anonymous racks making the browse for clothes into an extended and frankly exhausting search. When you do find the item you’re after the quality is often pretty poor, with the fabric a bit on the al dente side and loose thread and undone hems not unusual. At least the bright lighting means you can make an honest assessment of the clothes here. The sizing is also completely off the wall(some of the men’s shirts are like smocks) and a guide would be to try on a size smaller than you would usually wear. The changing rooms are not the best here, with only one cubicle available on the day I visited — the other one seemed full of stock and hangers. It’s all cheap though with occasional lower-than-Primark prices and for some knockabout gear that you’re not too bothered about the quality of this is worth having a look at.
