A voluminous pub sitting on the serenity of Rose Lane, the Rose of Mossley can sometimes feel a bit too spacious for its own good. So much room exists between the bar and tables you get the feeling the owner brought all his furniture from somewhere else and is spacing it out to stop the place looking empty. Never mind that though because if you fancy a quiet evening pint in a nice area, this pub suits the bill to a T… whatever that stands for. Even with music rolling across the heads of drunkards clotting up the walking space, the pub is impossible to feel claustrophobic in. Now as for agoraphobia, that’s a different kettle of fish…

The dear old Rose. Round the corner from my old Halls of Residence we used to come down here to get away from the hubbub of students that made up Carni bar… who am I trying to kid, we came here regularly, not because the food is Michelin star standard, but because it was better than the school dinners they served us in catered! Monday to Friday they do two meals for under a tenner so you can’t really grumble. We certainly didn’t but perhaps you have(quite rightly) higher standards than a first year uni student… if so, probably best to stick to the pints and watch the game on the big screen, or catch the live entertainment they have on a Saturday night if you’re in the area.

It’s not a bad pub I’ll get that in there now, but having once worked down the road from here I have spent many a lunch hour here trying to spend that hour in the most sensible way one can — with a pint — so I can say that I have grown pretty sick of the sight of this place. The Rose does have a big screen to show football but there have only been two occassions that I can think of when there has been a full house and a good atmosphere — both Liverpool games so not much of a venue for any blues out there. Wth so many places to eat in this area of Liverpool I’m not going to suggest making The Rose a place to venture solely for the food as it is the same as any number of pubs around and only good to grab a quick bite to soak up any beer. The one thing it does have going for The Rose though is a good social vibe as you will recognise many of the same faces after a few visits and if you have just moved to the area it’s a good place to get to know the locals.

To be honest, I’m surprised the Rose is still open. Facing stiff competition from surrounding eateries and bars that have sprung up as the area has become more popular, it has managed to stand its ground and exist as a decent pub. Hosting pub quizzes and having wide screen TVs showing various sporting events has probably not done it any harm, but I’m fairly sure that the only thing that has kept this pub afloat really are its loyal patrons, most of whom are getting on a bit. The pub does have some good food and a nice atmosphere, and it is a nice alternative to all those showy bar/bistros that surround it. The prices for drinks are reasonable and it is no doubt a popular haunt for students who walk down from the Carnatic halls of residence.
