Not somewhere I would recommendnot really the kind of place I ever go. but I’ll try any pub once.
This is basically a sports pub (Liverpool fans) with no real ale. Manns Chestnut from keg was nothing special, but very reasonable at 1.90 for a pint.
Was friendly, but felt like the kind of place that would be a bit tasty at the weekends or around match time. Somebody tried to sell me some toothpaste, but I already had some.

Back in the days when the old Odeon stood next door, this pub would make a great little spot to grab a pint before your film started, perfectly ensuring that you’d then be stuck with a full bladder in the middle of the movie, always during scenes you absolutely, positively couldn’t miss. Ah, good times.
I’m not sure whether it’s my crumbling memory but I could have sworn this pub used to be nicer. I went the other day and found it to be a threadbare building of impenetrable gloom. Stickers and advertisements informing people on things like the upcoming smoking ban and the acceptance of ID cards gave it a painfully outdated air. I didn’t think the moving of the cinema would plunge this pub into such sudden negligence but it’s apparent that this is what’s happened. I would say it’s a shame but frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.

The name is slightly random for pub now that its frame of reference, the old Odeon cinema next door, is no longer there. It was always a good place to stop for a pre or post movie pint and would be filled with other similar folk wanting to stretch out their evening.
However now that those punters are drawn to the other side of town, The Picture House is much the same as many of the other pubs along London Rd. That’s a little cruel as it is certainly more lively than The Lord Warden — is that place ever open? — and is clearly a place that is up for a laugh — they need to be judging the state of the karaōke singers!

It is clear from the current world cup decoration that this pub prides itself on being a sports bar where fanatics can enjoy the beautiful game with a pint.
The sports purpose is fulfilled well with plenty of screens and constant coverage of major sporting events, so job done there.
The prices of the drinks are good a pint is cheap and quite good quality as well but when the footy is on it can take an eternity to be served.
The atmosphere during a game is fantastic you can often expect a sing along and plenty of good banter between opposing fans who are enjoying the sporting spectacle.
My problem with this place is the atmosphere when sport is not present: the staff can be unfriendly as can be the regulars and as a newcomer to the city I didnt feel very comfortable at all.
On the whole great as a sports bar, not so good as a regular drinking spot or local favourite.

The picture house is a perfect haunt for students looking for a cheap drink in the early afternoon, or travelers on there way home coming off the train at lime street. If you can look past the poor lighting, odd smells and inebriated regulars then the picture house is great for a quiet midweek drink with some friends. If there isn’t a match on; then the big screen tv’s are usually left on whatever channel the barmaid happens to be watching; but if your not interested in watching this then there are 2 large snooker tables to keep you occupied.
A particular favorite in the picture house is the pints of carling which are £1.55 before 6pm during the week. If your a football fan then the picture house is not to be missed, the big projector screen is a massive draw ensuring good views of the game from all over the bar area and its prime location at the bottom of london road ensure a good atmosphere.

The Picture House has some good tunes in the Juke Box but watch out for karaōke on weekends. Live bands on Fridays and Poker each Sunday from 7pm. The best night is Alicia’s open mic night. It seems that anything goes from music to poetry. It gets really busy «full chock» when the football is on — you will be lucky to get served.
The locals say that the Picture house is «Boss» a proper Scouse pub. During the week you can get a pint from £1.55 and they have a selection of popular beers from around the world. 3 Cocktails for £10 and a bottle of wine for the price of 2 large glasses.
