Spent a few nights here back in the day. Long bar, some good parties, much live music. Main church area suffered poor acoustics for anything amplified as built for acoustic voices but a great space.

Even if this place was rubbish I’d still advise you to come and gawp at the building. Set in a huge converted gothic church, the 291 Gallery is a little bit of what you like, switching between gallery space, bar/restaurant and club. Though the art may not be to everyone’s taste with many unconventional and frankly disturbing creations, you can’t fail to be impressed by this rather absurd blend of old and the ultra-modern. The crowd similarly might not be to everyone’s taste being especially sullen and arty, even for a bunch of artists. However, it is a great place to catch some outrageous outfits. I’ve not been in the day but there is a really nice beer garden where you can apparently grab a magnificent sunday lunch. Especially nice in the summer I would imagine. Like everything else with this venue the music too is unconventional. You’re just as likely to hear some dirty grimy beats as a peculiar rendition of a barn dance — just come with an open mind. Quite an eye-opener and a truly magnificent venue.
