Tasty, cheap and good service. Best thing in the menu is the aubergine side dish. For some reason the food tastes significantly better when dining in than as a take away.

Yes, it’s like going back in time to the 1970s, but the curry is excellent. Also, compared to many of the curry houses in North /East London, it’s very good value for money.

The 1970’s style interior adds to the ‘traditional’ feel of this curry house. I recently ate there with a group of neighbours and we all agreed that the range and standard of the dishes was really quite good. Good service and cold beer too. It’s hardly upmarket but to my taste superior dining experience to the ‘modern’ curry houses with their sparse interiors and laminate floors.

I used to eat at Bengal Curry House and take foreign visitors there to sample some British curry but NOW I see they have a very bad hygiene record on scores on doors site. They are rated poor on hygiene and bad on complying with regulations for health and safety. The restaurant has no stars for cleanliness so until Bengal Curry Cleans up their act I won’t be eating there lest i contact some dreadful food poisoning.

This is indeed a bit of a treasure — not much to look at on the outside and dated 80s indian restaurant décor on the inside, but its not offensive if anything its quite comforting! It does what it says on the tin — fresh, tasty, good quality indian food served in a relaxed atmosphere. We ate there last week for the first time despite having lived here for nearly 3 years, I think maybe put off by the outside, I now regret having waited so long. The garlic chilli chicken was incredibly tasty I was embarrassing my husband making hmmmm noises while I scoffed it! I also liked the no nonsense service — big glasses of wine and pomps with pickles served pronto as we chose our main dishes. I saw more people arriving to pick up a take away rather than eating in house which was a shame but even I took a take away menu home with me. In a way I don’t want it to become mega popular as its quite special the way it is — a little gem we want to use again and again.

The Bengal Curry House is right opposite St James Street Station, Walthamstow. It is an old school Indian restaurant. The décor inside is 1980s High Street curry house(deep red curtains, dark lighting, wodden tables). As such, it’s a bit of a treasure. And the dishes are good quality. There is a vegetarian option for every menu section. You won’t find anything unusual on the menu, just straightforward curries, but the home-cooked nans are superb.
