Checked in here pre theatre. Not my usual haunt, at the back of Picadilly Circus in central tourist land. Ordered a London Pride. When I expressed surprise at the £4.04 price for the pint, the woman behind the bar smiled to helpfully educate me that ‘Yes, that’s how much beer costs in London!’. Well, clearly she must be right and I must be from out of town. Despite the fact that, Yes, I do live in the middle of London and No, I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than £4 for a London Pride, I must be a tourist, otherwise I wouldn’t be here. Apart from that little irk, the place was OK but nothing special.

My review is LONG overdue since I visited this pub on my last day in London in June 2012. I arrived early-ish about 11:45 am because I had a flight to catch. Located not far from my hotel, I stumbled upon this place. As time went by, the lunch crowd started to arrive. It is customary to order your food/drinks at the bar in London for the most part, but when I dined here, the adorable young English waiter went above and beyond to make my visit a memorable one. We exchanged pleasantries and he expressed a yearning to visit NY someday. I was undecided what to choose from the menu but ultimately went for the Steak & Ale pie. Now, I’ve had savory pies before both traditional and non traditional and this was by far nothing like I have ever tasted before. The crust was flaky and tasty without being too buttery. The filling contained pieces of steak and vegetables in a succulent sauce that wasn’t creamy or loaded with flour. It was perfectly seasoned without being too salty or bland. A(somewhat large) side of mashed potatoes was served with the pie – whipped just right. I washed everything down with a refreshing cider and after the terrific service and meal, I was prepared to say so long to London — -until next time.

Monopoly Pub Crawl — Stop #22 — Regent Street(Green) Around the corner was our next pub and the first of the green color group. The Captain’s Cabin is a relatively new pub but maintains a lot of the old world charm its predecessor had. This is more a sit down and eat rather than barge in and drink so I think our group of crawlers was slightly less than welcome. Still, they served up our drinks and we settled in for a minute among a very mixed crowd ranging from young kids barely allowed out on their own to pensioners just looking for their standard Saturday pint. I think I could quite like sitting here on a quiet Sunday afternoon with a pint and a good book, but given the location I don’t think I’d often be browsing Piccadilly looking for a place to read. However, were you to be shopping in the afternoon and in need of a place to relax, you could do worse that the Captain’s Cabin. Crawler-wise, it’s a friendly stop but don’t stay too long as you’ll go from novelty to nauseating pretty damn fast.

I agree with the rest of the Unilocalers on this place: a solid three stars. Around lunch time we were starving and couldn’t find a place that had bathrooms for some reason. We saw the Captains Cabin and ran for the place. I was just glad to eat. I ordered the fish and chips and it was alright… not fresh but didn’t taste bad either. Our server(and bartender all in one) was really nice. The menu consisted of typical pub food. Nice décor, typical to the pub scene also.

Had a quick beer in here last night, seems nice enough. Barmaids were friendly, music wasn’t too loud, we found a table with no problem. Can’t remember what I had to drink but I’m sure it was fine.

I thought this place was decent… worth trying some more food/drink at, and maybe I’ll give another star… I chose it as my first London pub to have a pint and F&C in. I was quite happy with the pint and satisfied with the fish and chips — although, from my early childhood experience on Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod, I’ve had better fish and chips. The interior couldn’t get any better thought. Such typical British pub décor — perfect…

It was my work local for a few years and a pretty good one. Great location. Shame about pepsi rather than coke. Not too many tourists, mostly office workers. Slightly nicer upstairs than down — all-in-all a good place to meet.

Yet another London pub with a great homely feel and pretty good eats, as well as a good selection of beer. The fish and chips are about as good as elsewhere, and the London beer is actually pretty good. The bartender was nice, explaining all of the English eats that I wasn’t really familiar with(including the confit, which I guess isn’t exactly primarily English food). We got a seat in a comfy corner of the place, away from the bustle of the front of the bar. It was a nice place to relax after visiting Trafalgar Square.

This is a great pub to know and I was almost tempted not to rave about it as I don’t want it to get too busy! It is so close to Piccadilly Circus, yet slightly off the beaten track so unless you know it is there — you wouldn’t go! Which makes it perfect for a central London pub as it is never too busy! The real ales are good and just somewhere nice to go when you are central!

This pub isn’t far from Piccadilly Circus, but is tucked down a side street that means its not spotted by every tourist or passerby. It’s also very large and roomy so if you hate crowds and you’re in the Leicester Square area it’s not an awful choice. It’s a bit chain, though, and more than a bit touristy, with too much tacky signage. Drinks and food are typical and average: a couple of lagers, a couple of ales, bog-standard fish and chips

The Captains Cabin which is off Haymarket street is a night spot where a former 18th century coaching house called The Cock Tavern used to be. The Cabin has been refurbished, but still has a feel of an old pub which is quite cool i suppose. The Captains Cabin tend to attract a crowd mixed in age and you can expect to see everyone from trendy young folk to pensioners. Drinks are very cheap atonsihingly cheap actually, with drinks starting from £1.90…Amazing!
