Dip & Flip

I’m happy that Dip & Flip no longer just a one-​off Burger joint in Clapham Junction station on Northcote Road. They have opened up a second location on the Wimbledon Broadway a while back and now are in tooting as well — staking their burger claims across the southwest of London.
Their unique selling point is their application of thinly sliced roast beef to their flagship dip&flip burger — it’s served with a dish of au jus dipping sauce.
They top things with gooey, American-​style liquid cheese, they leave it to you to figure out how to deal with this gloppy mess of amazingness. Bridging the world of the cheeseburger and the French dip sandwich to messy effect.
The Flip & Dip is the top-​end of the menu, clocking in at £9.95 — but you can start on the other end of the scale at £5.25 for a basic patty melt (non-​cheesed burger). I find the decision to use squeezy cheese for their cheese fries and cheeseburgers a polarizing choice. If you don’t like the nacho-​esque style cheese, then leave it off!
The venue itself is a cool, retro décor that is hip these days in London. post WWII vintage graphics adorn the walls inside and the 60s-​style chairs remind me of old public school seats from history class. The only drawback is that the joint gets loud. Really loud.
Definitely worth a try if you’ve got a mighty appetite and don’t mind getting a bit messy. It’s a gooey mass of goodness that somehow works! I write more in-​depth on my website,

I love the burgers here! Great atmosphere and fun people! I always get the cheese burger and the gravy cheese fries, they are so delicious. The green chilies are fresh jalapeños for all of you spice lovers! It can get really busy and packed so go early!

Pure indulgence! That is a good way to describe my opinion of Dip & Flip. Having tried most of the main burger hotspots in London already, I felt the time was right to try another one, but this time topped with roast beef and swimming in gravy! This is not one for the clean freaks out there. Meat juice will run down your arm whether you like it or not. But it’s bloody worth it! The burgers are cooked perfectly and the addition of extra roast beef or lamb puts Dip & Flip very high on my list of burgers in London. If you like meat on top of meat smothered in meat juice and cheese then this is place for you!

Dirty, delicious grub. Dip & Flip combine a great patty with lovingly cooked roast meat, and make a heavenly burger. If they just served that I would be more than happy — a solid 4 stars. But then they add the gravy… and I would happily just have that in a pint glass. It’s the surprising second side to the meal that completes the picture.
And then there’s the fries — with gravy, bacon, «plastic» cheese and chilli — all melting together. Just the perfect level of heat, and a total indulgence.
This is not the best burger in London, but it’s perhaps the most fun and one of the tastiest.
Just to add, the service here is always friendly and warm — and non-​judgemental (!), particularly important given how much of a mess you will look eating.
Finally, to note: this is not a place for vegetarians — there really isn’t much on the menu that hasn’t passed through the fat of some animal or another. For similar reasons, this is not a place for those dieting — there isn’t a healthy option.

Great experience at Dip and Flip, the only disappointment was that the green chile on the menu was jalapenos, and not New Mexico green chile like I was hoping. Then again, why I’d expect NM chile to make it to London is beyond me.
My boyfriend ordered a milkshake which was delicious, and their pour for my glass of red wine was more than ample.

I used to rate this very highly but I went recently and it was just not up to the same standard. Was quite disappointed and will have to go back to Byron which has been more consistent. Still better than most places but not the best in town.

People are always raving about Dip and Flip, so I decided to take my gravy worshipping sister there for her birthday dinner. I wasn’t too excited as I am a vegetarian, but I was pleasantly surprised with their potato rosti burger. It’s a fresh idea for a veggie burger and it was really nice. My sister went for the bacon cheese burger and we shared a portion of squeezy cheesy fries. She fell in love with her burger as soon as she saw it and together they had a messy gravy affair. The cheesy fries were seasoned really well and had that lovely gooey guilty pleasure American cheese drizzled all over. The service was great and the food was fast at coming out. I will definitely be back and bring all my carnivorous friends.

I’m a big burger fan and I’ve tried pretty much all of the burgers in London that are rated well and this is definitely one of my favourites.
I like my beef to be mild tasting and juicy and this sure fit the bill! I had the dip & flip burger, which came with a few slices of thin roast beef on top. There was cheese and au jus dripping everywhere, and the crunchy coleslaw and pickle were a welcome addition. I did find it too messy to eat by picking up, so I used a knife and fork. I also didn’t bother with the top bun as I was there for the meat.
My husband had a beef french dip and loved it too. I thought the coleslaw and pickle combo was a bit odd for a french dip, personally, and would order it plain.
We also very much enjoyed our chips with squeezy cheese. It did get a bit firm quickly and probably would have been better if it was hotter to begin with, but it was delicious. I really liked the spicy paprika salt on them, too.

When we walked in, I thought that the place was oddly quiet — as it turned out we’d managed to beat the Saturday night rush by only about ten minutes!
We’d been wanting to come here for a long time. I love French Dip sandwiches but considering the prime thing about them are roast meats and gravy (two things in abundance in the UK) it is rather odd that they aren’t easily available here.
So we finally made it here last Saturday evening as we were travelling through Clapham Junction and jumped off with this our destination. I was worried because how could it live up to my expectation? But it did — and exceeded it.
I went straight for the roast beef French Dip, and didn’t have to wait too long for it either. It was delicious — it comes partly pre-​dipped but is delivered to your table with a little metal oven dish filled with gravy. Imagine if the sandwich was really dirty and needs to be cleaned in some really delicious bath water. Actually don’t imagine that, it’s better as a sandwich and some really good gravy.
It is messy — there is a reason for the kitchen roll on every table. But so worth it. The main downside? I live in North West London. But at least I now know that it’s worth the detour!

Heard many good things about Dip & Flip and finally decided to give it a try while I was staying in Battersea. I came here for a late Sunday takeaway lunch, just wanted something fast and satisfying, maybe covered in cheese. So naturally that means a Patty Melt. Like a cross between a hamburger and a grilled cheese sandwich it’s one of the ultimate American comfort foods. Plus it’s perfect for cold/​rainy days when you just want something hot.
Also noticed they have poutine on the menu which I immediately added to my order. Poutine! In London! I have a special place in my heart for poutine from my years spent living in Canada and it’s been especially hard to find places outside Canada that serve it. I urge everyone to try it here. Do it. You can thank me later.
Didn’t have to wait long for my order as I came here during «off-​peak» hours, they packed everything up nice and securely, careful not to forget some of their awesome gravy in two sauce containers, and I was on my way.
After coming home and promptly stuffing my face I decided I’m a fan of Dip & Flip. I didm;t even have time to take pictures I was that hungry and that impatient to eat. Patty melt was oozing cheese, buttered delicious bread, and a nice medium rare patty sandwiched between it all. Poutine could have had the cheese more distributed but the fries are excellent and well seasoned. Oh and that gravy, good lord! Just pour the whole container over anything and everything you order here. Trust me, it will make your life!
I just wish I had more time in the city to come back and introduce my friends to this amazing eatery. Glad I got to try it at least once before I left!

The fries were well-​seasoned (with paprika salt), and they serve Ting — quite possibly my favourite soft drink in the entire world — but the best bit is the burgers. OH. MY. GOODNESS. It is always a good sign when a burger joint asks if you *mind* if the burger is medium rare, but the delightfully sloppy, gooey piece of heaven that came to the table, with fresh gravy for dipping, was an unbridled joy. I haven’t yet found a comparably good burger anywhere in London. Sensational. Can’t speak for the rest of the menu, but go for the burgers!

The gravy was amazing. Every meal should come with a little bowl of gravy.
Had one of the beef sandwiches. Sadly I can’t say that I loved it. Burgers looked amazing (and ALSO came with gravy so I’d opt for that next time.
I visited a Saturday afternoon, just after 3. The small place was full, but we managed to get seated quite quickly.

Love the concept of dipping burgers, toasted sandwiches, chips and pickles in a bath of tasty gravy. So messy but so f*ing delicious! Burger patty was juicy but the best part was the added slices of gravy dipped roast beef in the burger!

honestly not very impressed by this place after all the raving reviews! just an average burger place. They serve their meat very rare! we had to ask them to cook it longer and it still came out very pink. the waitress was amazing and apologized when she came to pick up our plates and saw all the pink meat we had to pull out of the burger. Eating raw meat is not thing nor my guest. I typically like a little pink but this burger was still meowing at me. I give it more stars as I was really impressed by the waitress and that we didn’t even have to say anything and she took it off the bill. I think next time maybe i should just get the french dip with roast beef and not do their burgers. I prefer GBK up the road for burgers.

One of my favourite places for a burger, however it is dripping in grease but does taste amazing!
Much better than Byron in my opinion, definitely worth checking out.

Alex S’s photo of the lamb burger tells you everything you need to know about D&F — it’s not a big or clever idea, but they do unholy food and they do it pretty well (edit: did not know that a French dip is a thing… also, that sounds far filthier than it actually is, just saying). D&F’s signature is a beef burger with American cheese, pickle, and roast beef. Served with gravy — yeah, it’s another messy one.
Having been 3 months since I went here, the burger is still pretty memorable. As I said, it’s not necessarily clever food (it’s not bad thing, mind) — the patties don’t have the same depth of flavour of Bleecker St or Patty and Bun, and it’s not a 12-​hour slow roasted joint of beef. And it doesn’t come with truffle burger sauce. The gravy itself is not amazing — I mean, it’s not Bisto, but it’s a little bit thin. With all that said, it’s definitely one of those things which was greater than the sum of its parts and they come together to make a rather good burger — I was a bit puzzled initially, but the gravy really does add a little bit extra, especially with the brioche bun. All in all, I was impressed. The chips are also decent and really crispy (perfect gravy vehicles); I’m sad I didn’t get to try the poutine but that’ll be one for next time.
In summary, it’s a good experience and doesn’t pretend to be anything more than it is — sloppy goodness and posing great risk to white clothing and I can recommend it to anyone living in this part of town.

Dip & Flip, you have made the list… of reasons I never want to leave London!
As we went on a Sunday, and Dave A. got roast beef on his Dip & Flip burger, I’d argue this was technically a traditional Sunday dinner. And also would argue that it should therefore become a regular Sunday dinner, if not for the fact that I live in daily fear of the dreaded Heathrow Injection that continues to befall me and my Australian brethren when we move to London. Maybe a quarterly Sunday dinner…
Anyway, onto the food order. As already mentioned my dining partner ordered the Dip & Flip burger, I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger, and we split a cheese and gravy fries. Slight hiccup — they were all out of bacon, but they did offer to add roast beef or lamb for the same price, which I appreciated but declined. In the end, the bacon wasn’t needed, my cheeseburger was AMAZEBALLS. Perfectly pink all the way through, the cabbage was thinly sliced and crunchy, and the condiments were perfectly balanced (no soggy overload of sauces). And I loved the little bathtub of gravy — perfectly sized and shaped for dipping my burger into. The cheese fries were yum, but a bit much for us, I’d probably stick with just gravy next time.
Oh yes, there will be a next time. Heathrow Injection be damned.

Dip & Flip is a little burger restaurant located near Clapham Junction in South London. The interior is simple and beautiful. And the menu is not too complicated either — mainly burgers, as you would expect.
I was happy to find poutine on the menu — chips, cheese and gravy — a delicious import from Canada. As main, I selected the bacon cheese burger.
I did not have to wait very long, until my tasty plate of food arrived. I struggled to finish my burger, the poutine was too tempting and it is richer than just a few chips.
The burger is a messy affair with crispy bacon and melted cheese all over the place. And dipping is highly recommended. The burger is delicious and dipping makes it so much better, it tastes like it is made for dipping. Probably, every burger can do with some dipping, but you do not get decent gravy with most burgers.
The service was friendly and efficient, and overall, I really like Dip & Flip. I should be back soon…

Man, I feel like a jerk for two stars — it wasn’t bad, but it just wasn’t all that. Two and a half is fair, I think, because service was great and the atmosphere delivered (urban, casual, cool, no-​fuss).
I actually tried the Dip of the D&F: what they refer to as a French Dip (£6.50). French Dips are fairly popular in the US, which may have worked against them in my case. I’m used to it being on a chewy/​crusty baguette, which holds up well to being dipped in meat juice. D&F, however, employ brioche buns for both burgers and dips, and the texture just felt all wrong — crumbly and mushy once you get just two bites in.
(In general, can I just say I can’t wait for this brioche bun trend to head out, it does not work for juicy burgers, guys, it just doesn’t!)
Anyway, I had the roast beef with slaw, dipped once (can also choose to have them dip twice or soak it), and it comes with a side of the gravy for more dipping. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, I found my sandwich was not structurally viable enough to attempt further dunking — it was so all over the place I could barely get it in my mouth let along dunked in bowl of liquid *then* into my mouth.
I also found the gravy to be too thick for my taste. French Dips are typically served with au jus (simply juice of the meat that is in the sandwich). Sounds like gravy, right? Well, it is, except that it is intentionally unthickened. The gravy just felt too heavy. Also, I was inexplicably annoyed that it was served in a styrofoam bowl. I don’t know, it just really bothered me.
But enough about me — three others at the table enjoyed the double cheeseburger with bacon and a lamb dip. The lamb-​haver was not impressed, and burger-​havers (£8.95 for double cheeseburger with bacon) said it was nice but agreed it was certainly nothing special (the burgers are also dipped and come with a side of gravy — but it wasn’t really utilized).
I added cheese to my dip, and when I asked the server what kind of cheese it would be (swiss, cheddar, etc) she replied without much conviction that it was «like a soft cheese that we make here». I guessed it was going to be the same as what covered the cheese fries (basically like a cheez whiz style) and was correct.
It was great on the fries, kind of weird on the sandwich (it kept gooping off in chunks that kept their shape on the plate and then got cold).
So I guess the overall takeaway was that their big USP — the dip — didn’t really add much to the experience.
Now for some nice things: I like that they have craft beers (by the pitcher if you want!) and that you can order a fried egg as a «side» or on top of your sandwich). I think the prices were perfect for what it was.

It was Nava’s last week in London before getting shipped back home to the states, home of greasy burgers and fries. So what do we send her off with?! More greasy burgers and fries!!!
My dining partner for the night was Alex S, so we shared the following:
— fried chicken burger with green chillies, cheese and bacon, £7 + extra
— dip n flip burger: cheeseburger with with a slice of lamb, £10
— regular poutine
All burgers came with a small side of jus to dip. And man, these burgers are already good on its own without the jus, so its an added bonus that the bun is soaked in added juice with every bite! The dip n flip burger was good, but I personally didn’t think the £10 tag was worth the hype. I loved the fried chicken burger with all the added works (no egg in this one), it was friggin delicious! I would come back here again just for that!
The poutine was a major disappointment, and it’s not because I’m a picky Canadian!!! Well maybe a little. They’ve got cheese curd (key in poutine!), but it was diced into really tiny cubes that were slipping through my fork. The cheese should be cut up into larger chunks, and smothered in a thick piping hot gravy that clings to every crack and crevice (key#2)… ohhh the gravy!!! Where were you!!! The gravy was incredibly thin, I stared and honestly thought they forgot to add it. Overall it was bland and flavourless, we ended up dipping everything in ketchup, mayo and Tabasco. The fries were great by themselves, and I was tempted to order a batch of melted cheesy fries because I was so sad.
Overall, it’s a great place for burgers and fries, you must add on green chilies, cheese and bacon at a minimum. It’s worth it!!! Just steer clear of the poutine :)
