Dollar Grills and Martinis

Now closed and re opened as Paesan. Huge improvement.

Surprisingly good. I am from the US.
I had a burger stuffed with cheese with quince jam. It was excellent.
I had 2 cocktails, they were excellent.
Tortilla crisps (chips?) with salsa, guac, and mayo were excellent.
Onion rings were excellent, and I hate onion rings usually.
People were getting steaks and loving them.
And there’s a raging nightclub downstairs.
Go.

My decision to venture to anywhere in particular is always amplied if I discover there is amazing wallpaper. Quality of food/​drinks? Price? Don’t care if you have the right atmosphere (well, to a degree).
I had just finished a 3 hour super-​flinch session of finishing a tattoo and was in need of a drink. Lucky for me, I had 30 minutes left to take advantage of Dollar’s 2−4−1 cocktails list.
Walking down to the bar area, the atmosphere had an intimate, romancy red hue to the room. I bunkered down on my lonesome to a small dome-​ish booth squared away with a television playing silent German films.
I ordered a spicy drink called Hot Lips (which was 70% ice) and then some fantastic Old Fashioned called the Boulevard. The second was exponentially better than the first and for 7 pounds? Why not.
This place rocks. I hear the food is a bit tentative but hey! If you’re in a drinking mood, come here!

I will never ever go back to this place. We sat outside which would have been nice however, the waitresses and kitchen staff were constantly taking their cigarette breaks standing next to our table. Not only that, one of the kitchen staff spat on the floor, just missing my foot.
My steak was the worst I’ve ever had, the water we asked for never arrived, our dessert menu took 45 minutes to come even after 2 reminders and we had to wait ages for the bill. For the first time ever, I refused to pay the service charge which was automatically slapped on our bill.
I wouldn’t recommend this place at all. As a local resident, I can say there are much MUCH better places for dinner and a drink in the area.

Perfection. Absolute, total, beefy perfection.
As an American, I long for USDA beef. It’s not a slam on the beautiful beef raised here in the UK, nor am I afraid of mad cow… it’s just a flavour difference caused by a grain vs. grass diet. I prefer what is familiar. I bow humbly to the superiority of British chocolate and dairy, though. See? I’m reasonable.
Aaaaaaanyway, at the urging of our server, I opted for the USDA ribeye, and there are no words. So, so tender. Buttery. Beautifully marbled. Cooked to absolute perfection. Piping hot. The garlic mash was creamy and fresh, with delicious little chunks of unmashed potato throughout.
My girls ordered a rack of ribs that were moist, slathered in delicious BBQ sauce, and very fresh. Most ribs over here tend to be dried out and reheated, but these were really fantastic. Honestly, just as good as what I would make on my grill back in sunny SoCal.
My husband had a delicious chicken sandwich. The avocado was fresh and perfectly ripe, and the hand cut chips were crispy and soft in the middle.
Honestly, I cannot find any fault in our meals. I think it was worth every cent, and we will most certainly be back!

Oreo milkshake ****
Broccoli with sesame and soy ****
Caipirinha ***
Guacamole burger **
Not sure I’ll go back for the burgers, but the broccoli with sesame and soy teamed with an Oreo milkshake? You betcha!

Whenever I’m in the city for work I take my clients to the Dollar Grill. The food is excellent (mostly burgers and such) cooked as you like. They have great lunch specials which are essentially a selection of items for £5. I’ve tried a number of different things for lunch and they have all been great. It does take a bit of time so if you are in a rush this is probably not your best choice for a quick lunch.
Great for affordability, taste, and surroundings and a nice walk from my office down the street.
